It was a beautiful day. The sun gleamed in the sky above them, unobstructed by clouds. Wind flowed from one side of the Amoras to the next, colliding with the walls of the cities and towns that fortified themselves against Lotheric and his perpetually gathering storm. Alistair's eyes spanned out towards the distance, one foot hanging from the wooden deck as he clung to a pillar meant to anchor smaller boats. For five nights, he had been hunting a mage by the name of Lorkund, a Druskan who frequently privateered across the Amoras and even the Vinasir, called upon by the dissidents of an old Vethcairn tribe.

Alistair had pursued him from Genteven's coast, only for him to narrowly evade him and be blocked by a storm -- torrential rain that battered the fields and waterways of the Northern Marches, forcing the Griscian man to flee. He continued his pursuit down the riverbed the coming morning, finding remnants of him; dead and battered souls along fishing villages, whispers from husbands, children and wives too horrified to speak every detail.

He had no particular moral imperative in pursuing him, even still, but it certainly lessened any hesitation he might have had. There was no rationality in senseless brutality -- much of it did not even score him favors, prestige or gold. It was as if he existed, and thrived, for the purpose of being loathed.

When the sun fully rose, Alistair set out onto the water of the Amoras. He jumped onto the surface of the river, manipulating the water to let him stand on its surface with Sway. Then, beginning to walk forward, the liquid began to shift and cycle around his feet, the Risen manipulating the tide with Skiff so that he could skate across its surface at a rapid pace. He set off shortly after, jetting across the water's surface, his speed picking up until he was far exceeding that of the vessels that moved across its breadth, trading luxuries and necessities from waterfront to city dwelling. Alistair wore only a pair of trousers that fell shortly beneath his knees, the sun glaring down on his back, the wind embracing his skin as it rolled across. Water constantly sprayed from the river against his form, though he remained unbothered by it. He was used to that sensation, by now.

The sun rose high into the sky, an hour passing, then two. Finally -- eventually -- the Sunderer found his prize, another Risen skimming along the edge of a broad galleon, slinging thick shards of ice that impaled through the hull. He clung too closely to the ship to be struck by cannon-fire, and the rocks and furnishings flung by the men on deck did little to dissuade him; he strafed out of the way, pulling people off of the ship's edge with water that dragged them into the deep. A Risen was strongest at sea, and Lorkund made that known. He was, on his own, superior to the vessel that he assailed, and all of the men aboard.

Alistair fired a torrent of water at the Druskan, hitting him in the back and forcing him into the water from the pressure. He lost his footing and sunk beneath the surface, only to swim forward and quickly re-emerge closer to the mage. Lorkund gathered tendrils around him, limbs of water that the other quickly matched, each mage conjuring four before sending them out to wrestle one another. As their tendrils fought for supremacy, the Griscian skid forward on the water, rushing toward Lorkund and throwing a punch that materialized a block of ice, flung forward by the force. The Druskai dodged, reversing fluidly around the motion and striking forward with a horizontal whip of water. Blocking with his forearms, which he coated in water, the half-Orkhai grunted and closed what distance remained, wrestling the other man and subduing him, the two of them submerging into the water together and disappearing from the sights of the crew above.

Moments later, the mage rose from beneath the tide, a Sunderscrap clutched within one hand while the other dangled the Druskai's head, lifting it up by his long dreads. He spat out saltwater that had gotten in through his nose, his nostrils flared as he processed everything that had just occurred. Alistair lifted himself onto the deck with a rising mound of water, dropping the dead pirate on the wood and landing on his knees. Pocketing the dead man's Sunderscrap, he looked up frantically at all of the sailors around him, and breathed.

"Give me a room," he demanded. No one seemed privy on defying him; the sailors, in fact, began to laugh at his directness.

"No full rooms available, I'm afraid," replied the captain. "I've got space in storage below deck, though. We'll sneak you a bed and you'll be nice and lonesome on your way to Genteven. Sound fair?"

"Sounds fair," he muttered. Alistair stood up, spitting out some more water and shaking himself off. Shirtless and drenched, he stepped down the stairwell leading to the cabins, quickly making his way below deck to recuperate so that he could wash himself off. Once there, he settled down on a wooden surface, creaking beneath his glutes as he breathed in and out.

"Damn," Alistair began to mutter, reaching into his satchel and pulling back out the Sunderscrap, shifting its angle to view it in different lighting. "You were a rough one, I'll give you that."

As the curtains of gloom slowly lift, once more allowing the glorious sun to take the helm and usher a new day ahead, the Jet-black-hair thief couldn’t help but let out a groggy groan as the tides slightly jagged alongside the ocean gales. Jared isn’t much of a seafarer, nor did he like the idea of being tossed overboard. However, the mere thought of water did not quench his nerves, nor did it quell his nightmares which seemed abstract to his very core; mere fragments of blacks, whites and greys in all different shades and shapes.

Before this sunny day, Jared was hanging out on the cargo deck, avoiding the sort of watchful eyes of the crew currently piloting this particular ship. The petty thief didn’t care much for people's names and details, nor cared about what was happening above deck. Instead, he found it more comforting to be alone with his thoughts in a dark place with only glimmers of light peering through the floorboards and portholes. Yet despite all of this, an uneasy sensation called along Jared’s back; He couldn’t put the finger on it.

Was he feeling lonely? Was he missing home or afraid of the unknown? All valid questions needed time to digest, but Jared's thoughts break from the loud ringings of a bell & a call to arm by a loud, husky voice. “What the hell is going on here?...” Jared muttered to himself as he slid closer to his hiding spot before suddenly seeing jagged bits of frost skewering through the ship's hull with a wave of hardened ice clipping the thief’s side in the bitter cold. “Ah, Fuck!” The weird sensation of an intense cold caught the non-combative thief off guard; There wasn’t even enough time to register the severity of the wound.

Mayhem let loose on the ship, and the crashing footsteps that slightly caved the floorboards were another telling sign that things were going poorly, Not to mention the screams of men being flung overboard, but that wasn’t time to fawn over. Jared had to move to another section of the cargo bay, one that wasn’t affected by this strange cold. Quickly slinging his backpack on, Jared quickly walks over to the other side of the floor, swaying inconsistently to the ship’s rocky beat and almost knocked prone from the unstable structure. Then, out of pure instinct, Jared conjured up a globe of Umbralplasm and shaped it to that of a jagged pick which he would use to stab through some of the crates to maintain some resemblance of balance.

In what almost seems like forever, Jared finally makes it across, only to discover that the ship’s erratic movements have stopped; A breath of relief was called for but quickly was cut short as a loud voice boomed above him demanding a room but was quickly dismissed by the sounds of the captain of this ship. Listening closely to the conversation, the sudden realisation that a stranger would be camping at the cargo deck for the remaining of the trip would be a nightmare to hide, and there wasn’t enough time to find a suitable spot. Spring into action, Jared quickly scours through the deck, hoping to find a semi-decent place to hide until he could arrive at Genteven, Spotting a small gap in-between a small pile of stacked crates. The thief quickly hurried through but not before letting out a slight, audible groan as his frost-cover side scraped the wooden boxes. Unfortunately, pain tolerance wasn’t Jared’s best skill, and he will have to practice his grit if he wants to remain undetected.

As he moved through the lower deck, the man heard what appeared to be a grunt of pain, though he paid the errant sound little mind. There were dozens of sailors and crew scattered across the vessel, all going about their lives, all clattering about and reeling from the assault laid on them by the now-dead Druskan. He was just glad to be alone and at peace, uninjured save for the muscle strain on his legs, skimming across the water's surface for as long as he did.

Of course, as time passed and no sailor poked out from behind the crates to unveil the origin of that noise, the man grew somewhat suspicious. He lifted his face, glancing away from the scrap and towards the barrels and boxes of wood, narrowing his eyes as he surveyed the area around him. He was no master of investigation, but whether out of boredom or sheer arbitration, the man stood up from the flat wooden surface and began to look around the deck. Being as tall as he was, he could easily peer over the crates, and it wasn't long before his eyes caught onto a shape that didn't quite fit with the rest.

The man stepped forward, winding one arm back to prepare one of his powers if he needed to -- he didn't think he did. The man rounded the corner, only to suddenly jolt forward and sprint towards the shape of the thief, tackling him onto the wooden floor of the hull and glaring down at him, his fist cocked and prepared to bash him in if needed.

Only for him to stop.

"I was right, then," he said lowly, in a deep tone followed after by a breathy sigh. Alistair pulled back, removing his weight from the other before moving to sit on his knees. "Stowaway, right? Looks like that makes us cabinmates. Charmed. I'm Alistair Reid -- no need to introduce yourself, though, if you're afraid I'll get you strung up."

Rubbing his eyes, the man coughed once. His throat still felt chafed after ingesting that saltwater. "Are you from Alistian?"

It seems as if only minutes have passed since this strange figure has made his presence known and made himself quite comfortable with its sounds. Jared couldn't help but hold his breath in silence as that was the only way he knew how to deal with the situation. The thief couldn't find a window to escape; if he didn't, god knows what punishments might be involved. Clutching to his frost-bitten side, Jared continues biting down on his lip to distract himself from the pain and peril he is currently in.

But it all seems for not as the stranger's footsteps seem to loom closer and closer; The boards were creaking ever so slightly by this figure's weight. Closing his amber-hued eyes and internally muttering to himself that everything will be okay, this mysterious person is probably bored and wondering; A brief moment of silence occurred… "Fuck… Something is not right…" Jared opened his eyes for a moment before suddenly being tackled by a rather tall and rather stunning-looking man… Too tall for an average human; Either way, Jared couldn't help but let out a loud gasp as the remaining air in his breath escaped from his lungs, and the pain from his side flared up.

The jet-black-hair thief could only stare at this mysterious man's face and balled-up fist with panicked amber hues, but then nothing… this strange man was holding his fist in the air and looking slightly bewildered.

Alistair, who initially seemed to be an enemy of sorts, quickly dialled back to a friendly manner. Something that caught Jared off-guard as his dense head wasn't good at picking up social cues... "Ummm... What???" Jared seemed confused at first, hissing to his inflamed side while his gruff, low-pitch tone utters confusion; briefly taking a moment to stare at the much taller male, taking a long look at Alistair's physique which caused a bit of redness to creep around his neck slowly, cheeks and ears but are covered for the most part before recollecting his stuttering thoughts.

“Names’ Jared… Yes, to the stowaway question and yes, about Alistian." The scrunched brows were more than enough indicator that this short male was confused as hell but probably more smitten or dazed than anything else. Not every day, a random, muscular stranger busts down the walls… "Can I even ask… What are you doing here? Why do you smell like the sea, and oh god… you are wet… really wet." Jared couldn't help but recoil slightly as he wanted to avoid getting his clothing & face cloth wet but quickly recomposes himself to show off a more stoic & collected manner.

"Okay... let's retry the introduction again..." Jared mutters to himself, still stunned and distracted by all sorts of things going on in this deck. "I think we started on the wrong foot; Alistair correct? I'm Jared; Your observation is correct that I am a stowaway; yes, I am from Alistian. I am just seeking a new leaf in life and hoping to get a few questions answered while I move about." Jared takes a moment to take another deep breath before sighing, which quickly turns to a slight hiss once more. "Do you happen to know what just happened out there? One minute I woke up to a bell ring, and next, my side got blasted by ice? Where the hell did the ice come from???? The Amoras River doesn't even have ice at all... This is all too confusing at the moment..."

The man chuckled with amusement as he gauged the other -- he listened to him, took in his words, and unsubtly found his state of controlled panic to be amusing. He answered what he'd been asked to -- Jared was from Alistian, he was a stowaway, and allegedly he was taking the ship he was on to start a new life; in Genteven, presumably. "I'd like to say that wouldn't be my first bet, but I did the same. Genteven's the origin point of my own new life." He pulled back to sit on his knees, pressing the flat of his palms slightly above them on his upper legs as he stared forward at the other. The more they spoke, the more inevitably clear it would be that Alistair had quite a distinct accent -- Griscian, and Noble at that, but most foreigners couldn't tell between the more elite and common dialects.

"As for what just happened out there..." Alistair wiped some water off of his brow, "...this ship just got attacked by a Druskan pirate, named Lorkund. He was the one lobbing ice through the hull, and drowning men in the water below. I pursued him, caught up with him, and have since killed him. His corpse is on the main deck, if you'd like to see," he added, nonchalantly. Of course -- he doubted it would be wise for a stowaway to enter the main deck, but the other appeared... sneaky enough. Jared, was his name. He tried to remember that.

Alistair rolled his shoulders, stretching as he turned his head away to get out a crick in his neck. "Sorry for being so drenched, and my state of undress," the man muttered. "I didn't want to ruin one of my good shirts pursuing him, so I just went like this. Sun's nice on my back, you know?"

He grinned. "Pleasure to meet you, though. Like I said, looks like you're my flatmate for the next day. Hope you don't mind the company."

Jared couldn’t help but find Alistair’s carefree attitude to life rather attractive in its ways;
While the coal-black-haired thief was more than calculating and establishing a sense of control over any given situation, this random stranger had a weird aura to his core, letting Jared’s guard down. “Ummmm; Yea, it is nice to have the sun’s rays hit your back… Sorry, just not used to seeing a tall and good-looking fellow like yourself appearing out of nowhere… And it is ill-advised for me to seek out a corpse when my presence isn’t known by most of the crew…” Jared could not help but pull the edge of his hood over his face to mask his vision of Alistair more.

The leather-armoured thief’s frame starts to shrink, albeit slightly as if a battle-ready cat started to relax but remains cautious about its situation. “Okay; Well, I am not much of good company… I just haven’t got to chat with many people… You know, avoiding things whenever possible and all… Either way! I don’t mind having a roommate for the time being… Ummmm… Yea…” Feeling awkward about the situation, Jared started to fidget around with his face cloth as one of his nervous ticks began to manifest itself, which quickly devolved into Jared grabbing a few of his lockpicks and twiddling with them in between his thumbs.

“Well, I recommend getting yourself comfortable; hopefully, the trip to Genteven will remain calm for the next day, and the day sets quickly… Just want to look at the sky more…” Jared muttered before taking this opportunity to stretch his back and arms but quickly looked at his side to assess the damage. “I don’t suppose you are a doctor, apothecary, herbalist or have some experience with checking wounds, right?” The thief asks sheepishly, as his experiences with wounds haven’t been the most stellar, and Jared had relied on many of his criminal contacts back in Alistian to help mend wounds even if they were crude.

The man's brows lifted as the other noted that he was "tall" and "good-looking." He now understood the source of Jared's redness a bit better -- he found him attractive. He was, if Alistair were to be presumptuous, crushing on him. The thought made him chuckle, the man reaching out to squeeze the smaller male's arm, reassuring him. "I hope I do not fluster you too much, my friend. I assure you, though, I am not a very intimidating man beyond the brawn of my exterior. No need to feel embarrassed around me."

If anything, he appeared to light up in response to Jared's interest; Alistair was fond of praise, and he didn't mind the idea of turning his flatmate into a bedmate. There were few better ways he could imagine spending a night out at sea.

In response to Jared's last query, the man nodded. "I am a novice doctor of sorts, yes," he answered truthfully. He'd had three years of medical training in Grisic; he knew foundational human anatomy and physiology to a reasonable extent, and knew the basics of first aid. Alistair leaned forward, offering Jared an affirming look before gripping the edges of his shirt, lifting the fabric over his head so that he could see his side to assess the damage. What he saw was largely a red chafe, almost like a friction burn, along his obliques. It would very likely bruise, and he imagined that after the initial impact it likely bled to some degree; some areas of the skin were raw, like the epidermis had been shaved off.

"I'll just apply an antiseptic and bandage it," he said, nodding before reaching into his pouch. It was water-protected, fortunately, meaning his bandages and small bottle of alcohol were still intact. Alistair rotated off the lid of the narrow glass bottle, pouring some of its contents onto a cloth before rubbing the disinfectant onto the wound. He then rolled out his bandage, extending enough of it to wrap around Jared's lower torso twice before cutting it off. Seamlessly and without checking for approval, he began to wrap the bandage around his body, studious in doing so.

"This could easily have been much worse," Alistair commented, pulling the bandage around for the second wrap before clutching some of it to prepare to tie it securely. "You're lucky. We might want to stay in contact after you get to Genteven, just in case it gets infected. The doctors there charge an arm and a leg."

Finishing the wrap, he pulled his fingers back and examined his work; the man was clearly satisfied, flashing a brief smile. "All set. Sorry if that stung."

“Ummm… I’m not flustered! What are you talking about….” The fact that Alistair pointed out his current state of emotions was something Jared didn't; His redded skin flared even more profound, almost crimson, as the handsome-looking man grabbed onto his arm in a friendly manner. “Easy enough for you to say that….” Jared could help but pout underneath his face cloth, but the shift of his jaws, cheekbones and eyes tells a different story.

Jared noted how Alistair’s eyes glimmer; “What could he be beaming about?” The thief ponders that question as he tries to read the man, but the lack of social experience is taking its toll on the poor, short man as his mind draws up a blank sheet.

Hearing that Alistair has some medical knowledge was a big sigh of relief. “Good, Alright…. Make this quick…. Hopefully, this doesn’t need cauterising…. I think that was a term used by a friend….” Jared spoke in a more cautious tone, worried about the external, lasting injuries he sustained over the years as a street rat, brawling for rights and taking in punishments from the law.

As Alistair lifted his shirt, it was clear that the blast that hit the ship caused a fair amount of damage to his body.“Oooo... That doesn’t look too good...” Jared muttered to himself as his amber gaze shifted to the red, purplish bruise across his side.

Seeing that his roommate had a few items on hand to tend to his wound was a good sign, though Jared didn’t like the idea of owing favours - a habit learnt when associated with the underground. “If it only needs to be cleaned and bandaged, that is good then…. I will return a favour when I can….” Jared quickly diverts his gaze before closing his eye tightly as the antiseptic washes over his inflamed wounds. “Ah! Motherfucker…” Jared couldn’t help him, as swearing was a way to ease the pain. That or biting onto his lips would result in other minor injuries.

“Wouldn’t mind staying in touch; After all, you are my first contact to Genteven, and you seem to know more about it than I do... So... You don’t have recommendations do ya?” Jared could help but scratch the bridge of his nose as he asked Alistair for additional assistance on setting up in Genteven. So far, it would seem that Alistair knew a lot about Genteven and even about abnormal situations such as the Druskan Pirate lobbing ice on the ship.

“Also… I might need your help on something… It is a bit hard to explain, but it is better if I show it to you when it reaches nighttime… I've been puzzled about for all my life, and it has eluded me & my network of people don’t know what it or choose not to tell me…” Jared sighs as Alistair was done with all of his medical procedures.

“How about this; I can do some cooking for you once we get to Genteven as a token of appreciation. You are a nice guy, and I am sorry for being skittish… I just haven’t seen many generous people in my walk of life so far… and ummmm…. Urhhhh!” Jared felt he needed to stop babbling on about useless details.

Throughout the latter part of their conversation, after Jared was properly mended, Alistair seemed to stare down at him quietly with a half, wide-eyed look. He could tell that Jared was nervous -- he was babbling a bit, and speaking a mile a minute. The larger man tried not to say much, letting the other get out what he wanted to while he pondered on his assertions and thoughts, his mind whirring like a series of cogs. Alistair sat down on his muscular glutes, opening his lap and settling his elbows on his legs. His chest tensed for a moment as he yawned, one palm opening over his lips while he continued to look at Jared.

"Right," he began, trying to process everything the other had just said. "Well, I'll happily help you with whatever that concern of yours is at nighttime. Just remind me, alright?" Alistair's brows lifted again as the other offered to cook for him. It was a pleasant suggestion -- he'd not really had someone extend an offer like that before, and it was innocent enough to where he found it sweetly amusing. Jared must have been a decent cook to extend the offer the way he did, and the idea of eating food other than the slop he normally did sounded appealing. The man quickly nodded in agreement.

"I gladly accept your offer," he said, extending a hand for the other to take, if he so wished. Alistair was starting to dry up over time; slowly, his hair began to settle somewhat, his skin glistening considerably less. He knew he'd start to get dank, though, sitting in the under corridors of the hull. The man would need to wash up before nightfall, or at least before he went to rest. "As for being nice -- eh, I'm not as kind as you suspect me to be. I'm good when I want to be, but that's not very often. Maybe I'm just basking in the feeling of being a hero -- you know, saving the ship, saving the damsels. I don't always get my own motivations; they're elusive things."

His arm still extended, the man parted his lips, pausing for a moment as he prepared to cross a sort of mental bridge.

"If you'd like, by the way, we could sod after I inspect your... 'concern' tonight. By sod I mean, you know -- fuck. I figured you'd appreciate the offer, so there it is."

Alistair spoke his offer with ease, at the end of the day. He was a Corvo -- it wasn't the first time he'd made that sort of suggestion, nor the tenth. He drew the eyes of others, and they drew his. There was nothing wrong with that fact.

"And please don't blither about, like a doe before a lantern. We're both adult men, Jared. I'm not blind or daft, and neither are you."

Seeing the larger male take a seat on the ground and watching Jared speak out his mind was oddly comforting as it wasn’t a one-sided conversation with his internal dialogue and it isn't often that Jared could vent out his racing thoughts; So many questions and yet so little answers, it was nice to have someone listen in silence.

“Good~ I've been meaning to figure this thing out for a while, but my leads keep heading into dead ends, and it is driving me nuts….” Jared’s amber eyes lit up as Alistair confirmed assisting his investigation about the strange, dense material he could conjure and the odd marking that would appear in the waking hours of the night.
“Will make to remind you… After all, as I stated before. I need to know what this thing is….” Jared’s beaming eyes dim slightly as his thoughts cloud over his mindscape.

Seeing Alistair nod to the suggestion of cooking a meal and extending out for a handshake, The thief grins as he could cook something tasty again. Still, the gleaming grin would soon disappear as Jared quickly recomposed himself. “Seems like we got ourselves a deal then. Do you have a particular meal or style of food you enjoy? Need to know, so I can start thinking about once we get to shore.” With that, Jared extends his hand and gives Alistair a firm shake.

“Eh… Fair enough, not everything is black or white but shades of grey… I don’t blame ya; The world can be cruel sometimes, more so to certain people.” Jared would let go of Alistair’s hand before crossing his arms across his chest to self-soothe after making his statement.

“Ummm… Wait… Can you run that by me again???” Jared’s eyes widened as his face quickly brightened back a brilliant shade of red around his neck, cheeks and ears.“Ummm…. Urhhh…. You might need to go slow then…. Urhhhh… Just haven’t….” The thief couldn’t help but stumble upon his own words, being extremely flustered by the direct statement made by his roommate and was quickly interrupted by the state that they were adult men after all.

“Ummm… Sure… Just be easy on me… I haven’t done much of this… So you are going to have to guide me on this….” Jared looks somewhat defeated, flustered and emotionally distant as he fidgets around with his face cloth and adjusts the collar of his shirt as his internal body temperature feels like it is boiling.
