Luna was excited for today. She was supposed to be going to a lord's party. She'd never been to an important person's party before, at least not in Radenor. She had always dreamed of attending a high-society function in a capital city and this was her chance to mingle with the elite. She was determined to make a lasting impression and show everyone her best attitude. Her goal was to settle down with someone important, after all. Her delusions of grandeur told her that the evening might bring her more than just prestige, and that she might find true love in the arms of a powerful lord.

Luna put on her best dress that she owned, and a necklace her she’d bought not too long ago. She looked in the mirror and smiled, happy with her appearance. She then took a deep breath, grabbed her small bag and headed out the door and went to meet up at the brothel where she’d travel with a handful of other women so they could arrive at the same time.

When they arrived to the Lord’s home, Luna’s expectations took a hit. The home wasn’t nearly as big as she was expecting, the decorations not as plentiful. She couldn’t tell whether this lord wasn’t all that important or if they just had bad style. There weren’t really many attractive people there either. None of them struck her as a “man of her dreams.” The girls were informed that they were arriving towards the start of the party and that many more were expected to arrive throughout the night.

In any case, the ladies split up soon after arriving. Luna chatted with some folks and looked pretty. That was the job, anyways. To her knowledge she didn’t actually have to do much of anything. Though she presumed that if she turned down people’s advances then she probably wouldn’t be attending many more parties. She sighed as she sipped on some wine and wondered when things were going to get interesting.

Malikyth was never one for large gatherings, let alone parties. A lord and his colleagues were having some sort of gathering in celebration of something, whatever it was he would never know nor did he even want to. he was unfortunately forced to attend as his guild was hired to act as extra security for the gala.

Leaning against the edge of the balcony, he had the perfect view, able to see the comings and goings of guests from all over the foyer and parlor. A calm yet intrigued smirk played on his face, his eyes darting from person to person, drinking in any hand gestures and body language, to the facial expressions of those I could manage to see. It was fun watching the interactions of such well-established citizens, a nice change of pace he could say at least, as he was used to dealing with his brothers and sisters of the guild.

Speaking of his guildmates, he had eyes on several from his vantage point and could see them moving about, alert and attentive to ensure nothing went wrong. Among the sea of guests, the entertainment for the night seemed to be among them as well. Woman of the night dressed in their finest dresses and makeup, more accurately, he saw a familiar face among the woman brought in to entertain the guest if one was so lucky. Some would point and smile, wave and blow a kiss, but he simply nodded back and moved to go greet the raven-haired girl he had met some time ago.

Approaching from her left, Malikyth tapped her on her shoulder, and when she would turn to face him, he would bow as politely as he could to her. "Hoping to find the man of your dreams tonight Ms?" he teased, only now realizing he had never gotten her name, and he could feel the flush of embarrassment come over his features.

A Familiar Face

Luna was simply staring blankly at a painting when she felt a tap on her shoulder. The painting was somehow more interesting than most of the people she’d talked to so far. She said, “It’s Luna. Luna Freya.” She then turned her head to see a surprisingly familiar face. “Oh… it’s you!” she said as her lips cracked a smile. It hadn’t been all that long since she’d last seen him, yet somehow she felt like she’d never meet him again after they’d last parted. He was, after all, just a magical bodyguard as far as she knew.

She giggled when she processed what he’d said. She said, “how did you know? I was hoping a handsome lord might take an interest in me. There doesn’t seem to be anyone that fits that description though. I’m not sure I remember getting your name either. How silly of me to have never inquired… Anyhow, how have you been?”

One of the women Luna worked with waved from across the room enthusiastically and winked at her. Luna rolled her eyes at her and pretended like she wasn’t there. She told Malikyth “oh don’t mind her.” Luna knew that she was just teasing them. Luna had been working with this woman for a few months now, and she had always been a bit of a jokester. She had an infectious laugh and a sharp wit that made working with her fun. But she had a habit of teasing Luna relentlessly, which always got under her skin. She had tried to ignore it, but it seemed like no matter how much she tried to brush it off, the woman was always finding new ways to get a rise out of her.

After giving some time for Malikyth to finish responding she’d ask, “have you even seen who’s in charge of this party? I was told it was hosted by a lord but I haven’t seen anyone that really stands out yet.”

He smiled at her as she realized who he was, and upon her introduction, he bowed again and folding one arm behind his back. "My name is Malikyth, and it is my fault for not introducing myself initially when he met some time ago." he apologized, scratching at the back of his head from the embarrassment of such poor etiquette. He was glad to see a face he knew among the crowd.

Up until now, he was simply getting ogled by some of the guests, feeling their eyes strip him with their imagination and form their fantasies in their heads about him. He could let that social wall down just a bit in her presence, and he was pleased to know she was still doing alright. "They haven't burned me at the stake yet, so I believe I'm doing alright, just keeping out of trouble and my head attached to the rest of me." he giggled, looking at the woman who seemed rather intrigued by their interaction.

Luna waved her off as nothing to be concerned with to which he simply agreed to do so, and quirked a brow at the inquiry of the man of the house. Malikyth saw him but for only a moment, but he didnt see enough for him to form a clear picture to describe the lord of the party. "I can't say I got a good enough look at him or describe him, to be honest, my apologies." he felt a bit bad as he wished he could have been more help to her.

In any case, he extended a hand to the raven-haired woman. "Care for a drink?"

Questions

Malikyth. She smiled at the name. She’d never met anyone by that name before and that made it unique. Having travelled between cities for the past few years, she’d come to know a lot of interesting names. Unsurprisingly, the unique ones happened to be attached to unique individuals. She was glad to hear that he had avoided death so far and wondered if he was exaggerating when he mentioned avoiding getting beheaded. She was inclined to think the worst about the guild so she didn’t know whether to take that comment literally or not.

“Ah, well I suppose the lord will show up eventually. Surely there must be some reason to host this party. They don’t tell us any details like that. Just show up and look pretty, that’s all I was told to do.” She sighed and was glad that Malikyth suggested a drink. She nodded. “ “Sure! I’ve wanted one but I wasn’t sure if I ought to ask. I still can’t tell if I’m supposed to act like a guest or employee. If you can’t tell, I’m not used to this kind of scene.”

She’d take his hand and follow him to wherever drinks were served. Along the way she’d ask, “ “Say, what kinds of magic can you do? I moved here from Daravin where magic was treated completely differently than it is treated here. I hope I’m not prying too much by asking.”

She hadn’t figured out whether he actually liked having magic or not. She gathered that he didn’t like the guild, but she thought that she would still enjoy her mentalism abilities even if she was a slave. She shivered a bit just at the thought of using her magic to look into the emotional states of some of the guests here. She might have, had she not used magic a handful of days ago.

Guiding her over to one of the servants with a drink tray, he retrieved two, one for him and one for her, smiling at her a bit as she accepted her drink. Extending his arm he escorted her to a place where she could sit, a lounging couch that wasn't occupied but put her in view of anyone who may catch her fancy or there's. He remained standing as he was on duty of course and had to be ready in case somewhere were to happen and he needed to spring into action.

"To be rather honest I have never met a civilian so intrigued by magic here in radenor, so forgive me if I ever show aversion to your inquiries. But to answer your question I am a practitioner of Brand." he kindly noted, removing the glove on his hand to reveal the Mark of Control that rested on it. Sheathing his hand once more he downed the flute of alcohol and sat it on a nearby table, crossing his arms under his chest as he leaned against the wall. "What was it like, this Daravin place you come from? I don't get out much and one of my dreams is to travel, so I am genuinely curious about other places."

He tilted his eyes downward to look at Luna, a quaint smile on his lips before turning his attention back to the guests that were starting to come in full swing one after another. "It seems the bulk of the guest list is starting to arrive."

Luna sat down and let out an exhausted sigh. She’d been on her feet the whole time, up till now. It was nice to be able to sit down and just relax. Forcing a smile, talking to people that had bland personalities, it was all fairly exhausting. Being a good courtesan was more than just looking pretty. At least she enjoyed her present company and was able to have an actually interesting conversation for once.

She sipped on her drink while he spoke and her eyes widened when she saw his mark of control. She strained to remember if she’d missed the mark the last time they’d met, or if Malikyth had gloved his hand then as well. She supposed it didn’t matter either way.

She smirked at what he said. She responded by saying, “In Daravin, mages basically rule society. Surviving initiation is akin to God saying that you’re better than everyone else. It’s not impossible to be successful if you’re nonmagical, but I’m sure you can imagine how hard it must be to do so. I wouldn’t say it’s a perfect place though. Since magic is so revered, it means that many people try to get initiated and very many die in the process. Also, since mages are so common, you have to worry about magical threats a lot more than you’d have to in Radenor. If you ever find a way to break free of the guild, Daravin should be on the top of your list of places to go.”

Luna groaned when he pointed out the stream of guests coming. Their conversation was just getting good and she could already feel the eyes of a couple men looking her up and down. She presumed the only reason they didn’t approach her was because she was sitting with another man at the moment. She took another sip of her drink then said, “yes, won’t be long now till I have to go. Before that though, would you mind telling me a bit more about your magic? Brand is one of the combat focused ones right? Do you ever get to do anything fun with it?”
