Ash 10 4621¤

Two days prior Miki was in Alistain poking around the market for some new digs. She had received secretly a letter in her pocket she only found later that night, it was a hand written invitation to a party, insisting a mask be worn, held at a bar bordering the Badlands outside of Alistain. Miki would have to take a ferry across the river, and did, arriving just on time for the festivities. This bar was known to her, and many, as a free trade area and welcome respite once the Badlands were behind you. Not entirely lawless the the Badlands themselves, it was still rarely patrolled by the Halamire, this night, it would seem none were around. Miki had no mask, instead she wore a simple head wrap covering her entire face save for her horns, which would not be covered, and eyes so she could see. She wore this night what she always wore, her studded leather jacket, her white tank top, and her leather pants. She of course had her chariot, which she rode here from the ferry, and her gun, which was strapped discreetly on her back.
'Hope I don't have to use this tonight...'
She thought to herself watching the cloaked and masked people assemble what looked to be a large effigy of wood. It stood nearly ten feet tall and was shaped like a woman in a huge bouffant dress. They were almost done by now and were just adding the last of the straw and tinder to the bottom, Miki assuming they meant to light it on fire. She felt like she stood out among the other moreso than usual with the badland ilk. While a fair amount of people were dressed in their usual attire, all wearing masks as she, there was an overwhelming amount of people here wearing ornate masks and cloaks to cover themselves.

The sun began setting behind on the horizon, clouds giving off a red and pink glare in the sky. Torches were being lit and the party was gathering around the effigy. She followed suit, new masks were being passed out among those not wearing cloaks. Simple, paper things connected by a string. She was offered a goblet and instructed to drink, which she did, and it was then passed around those who gathered and all drank from the goblet.
"Put this on, become one with us!"
Said the woman in front, who seemed to be leading the occasion. Some obliged, Miki did as well, while others kept their respective masks on. The woman spoke again.
"I am Wishing Willow, you may call me Wish. Tonight, for those who have gathered, we have a spectacle of the ages. A burning of the MAN! An effigy of the horrendous Entente. And may they burn beneath our feet while they tremble!"
With that, Miki gasped, all those cloaked who bore the torches of blasphemy tossed them into the stick pile at the bottom, lighting the effigy ablaze from the bottom. It was silent from the cloaked people, only those who were invited as she had been dared speak in a few hushed whispers.
"Clearly blasphemy."
One said within earshot of Miki. She could not deny, they were speaking the truth. Should the Halamire come all would be slaughtered or worse, imprisoned. This put Miki on edge at first.

That was when the effect of the drug in the drink began to take hold of her, the edges of her vision became purple and she saw a flash of light spin across the sky. The previous edge became heightened, fear and paranoia swimming in her mind. What was happening? She had clearly been drugged, but somehow she wanted more. When the goblet was passed back to her again she drank again, this time the effects being immediate. The party was starting to come alive, those cloaked revealed their bodies and began dancing around the effigy which was catching fire more and more. Miki's attention span was waning and she was becoming overwhelmed.
"Dancing with a devil!"
Some of the others were beginning to leave, the sounds of chariots starting up, clearly scared off by what the declaration was for this effigy to be burnt.

Miki then noticed another, and while she still had the goblet, she drank again before handing it to them. The person was covered from head to toe, where she could see, in tattoos.
"Hey there, pardner. You fancy a drink? There's something funny in this."
Each swig was getting her more high, more drunk, more colors spinning into her vision. Where there was fear before there was now only dangerous ease, playing with fire indeed. She flashed a mischievous grin to the other.

TIME STAMP

There were flashes of abstract images flooding behind Mímir's eyes. None of them stayed long enough to grasp onto, making it difficult to focus on the project before them, and impossible to capture on paper. In desperation for relief they hurriedly packed to make way for the badlands to scavenge for parts. The one activity that was always a mindless escape from these moments.

Sifting through the land did bring respite, however, the winds brought excited whispers of a gathering taking place that evening. The temptations of debauchery sparked an urge of wanted release in Mímir's body. Their mind was coming to ease, they questioned not their body as well. It'd been some time since they imbibed in cutting loose. The routine as of late had been to wake up, rush through repairs for their customers, then stay up all night working on personal creations. It was time to stretch their legs, live a little for whatever it happened to be worth to them at the time.

Following the whispers Mímir found their way into a labyrinth of bodies, and was instructed to wear a mask upon entry. Mímir, used to situations where hiding their identity was of importance, pulled out a light metal mask from their bag. It was fashioned to look like a wolf. They then proceeded into the mass of revelers.

Sickly sweet drinks perfumed the air, intermingled with musk and fire smoke. They filled their goblet repeatedly, forgetting that out here in the badlands they make them strong enough to break even the highest of tolerances.

The fluids performed the desired effect and soon Mímir started swaying in front of a wooden effigy. The energy shifted. A woman spoke, and the figure was set ablaze. People began to disembark, which was no surprise to them. The woman spoke of a divisive topic. As the crowd became sparse they noticed her. Her broken horns protruded from a crude paper mask. Something about her was magnetic. A sort of shared existential dread that moved them towards her.

She held out her goblet to offer a drink. Mímir accepted and drained the remaining liquid. They wiped their lips off.

"Would you care for another? I'm not ready for the night to end "

Miki grinned at them in response, the wolf lolled out its tongue and lapped at her, causing her to laugh, before reverting back to the regular mask. Colors swirled in her vision and she let out her hands to dance and lap at the fire which off in the distance sputtered and churned in the absthine's depths . A naked woman danced up to her and tugged on the pair's clothing. Miki giggled and declined, before the figure turned away and began cavorting again around the fire. Unceremoniously she took the goblet from the other's hand and looked, it was empty, around here were a spilled mugs, the crowd was thinning, but she could see no more glorious liquid.
"Some party."
She snickered. She couldn't help but laugh and giggle, the psychedelic soaked liquor was a personal favorite from this world, and she had never had anything like it. Tugging on the other's wrist she said,
"They call me Miki 'round here. Two's company, come my way?"

And if they would follow she would lead them off around the other side of the fire, where a precession of people had lined up to walk across hot coals and receive more liquor.
"This is your baptism, your rebirthing, your conception, all in one."
Willow was once again leading and speaking and preaching nonsense.
"Feel in the soles of your feet the pain so fleeting, yet met with great reward. Walk a path in each life with conscious step to find redemption basked in hedonism and pleasure."
Miki wasn't so sure she wanted to walk across hot coals for anything, let along liquor in a cult meeting, but before she could turn away she was jostled ahead and grabbed, then instructed to remove her footwear. Feeling an odd compulsion to oblige she removed her shoes and got back in line, as her shoes were taken off and not seen in this lifetime again. Behind her, the other would be getting the same treatment and if they refused nothing would happen but they wouldn't be able to participate.

She giggled as Mímir began to converse with her. They were certain that she was just as intoxicated as them, if not more so.

Miki. That was her name.

Such a lovely, bubbly creature, but once again Mímir could feel the sadness radiating through her. It was like a taught thread being pulled through two pieces of fabric. Weaving them together into a mosaic tapestry of chaotic energy, pain, and unknown pleasures.

A naked being danced nearby, luring the two to dance with her. Miki giggled again, however, shied away from the invitation. Then, like being jerked out of a dream, they were suddenly herded by the stragglers to a pit of coals. The strange woman that had been the source of the crowd dispersing was coaxing people to walk across the red hot bed of flickering flames.

The look on Miki's face seemed as if she was unsure whether or not to attempt such a feat. Mímir felt that other than some slight pain the following day she could manage. Besides, they both seemed like they were out for excitement. What's more exciting than drunkenly being initiated into a cult? Foolish, yes, but exciting nonetheless.

They grabbed Miki by the hand and whispered in her ear. "Heel to toe, keep your eyes on the end." She met Mímir's eyes for a moment, gave a firm nod of affirmation, then proceeded to cross the coals without so much as flinching. Mímir followed after, barely feeling the heat on their cool, calloused feet.

The instigator of the ritual praised their dedication and the two embraced in each other's arms in jubilation. Laughing together Mímir shouted, "What's next?!" Miki grabbed their hand in excitement, pulling Mímir back out through the labyrinth, back out beneath the sky which had become dark now. She pulled off Mímir's mask and grinned wildly. Mímir returned the sentiment, removing her mask.

Mímir grinned drunkenly. "Wow, hello there."

The coals were hot against her feet but the other was right, though they had not yet given their name. She would call them Tatty. Heel to toe she flinched across the hot coals and drank deep from the goblet which waited for her at the end, the server having to rip it from her hands to share with Tatty who came directly behind her. They walked without a single flinch across the coals and Miki found this very intriguing. They must be strong, stalwartly, and gallant. Likely she was just fucked up on the absinth, but when they removed her mask she gasped instead of hitting them in the face with her fist. A good thing she was drinking as touching was most certainly a no-no any other time. Removing their mask as well she grinned with a row of large, white teeth.
"Wow, hello there yourself Tatty."

The moment though was squandered with the sounds of something hard thumping against the ground, coming from the wicker man.
"What the... fuck?"
Her vision swirled with color and she couldn't make out what was being expelled from the center of the wickerman. Not at first. That was until she registered the bellowing screams. Evidently the cult had stuffed some people in the burning heart of the effigy, too intoxicated to move she watched as a single file line of flaming people leaped from the heart of the pyre.
"BUUURRRNNING for their SINS. A TRIAL BY FIRE!"
Willow was cackling like a witch as more and more screaming people leapt to their deaths pouring out of the effigy.
"Entente scum, we have gathered their newest Valran, bound and gagged them, and set them ABLAZE for their treason against freedom and sovereignty."
Miki was frozen in place, reaching for her gun which was not there, it was on her chariot parked dozens of feet away. She looked at Tatty but was too intoxicated to read their face, it swirled like a cubism painting and she almost fainted. Their eyes were near their chin, their nose floating on their forehead and their mouth agape and laughing. A lucky thing she did not have her gun, as there they would have died.

Screaming, trying to get away, dark cloaked figures surrounded her, fighting did not work, they grabbed her and had her pinned. The group moved away suddenly from the scuffle revealing directly in her eyesight Willow, who looked at her with the wild grin of a rabid fox.
"She who drinks so deliberately. Were you surprised? We of Simulacrum Abysmal Martyrs will accept anyone, and you have passed your rite by walking over the coals and bones of those who BURNED before. Allow me to prick your finger and drink your blood. And you will do the same to mine...."
Miki's jaw was dropped to the floor,
"That's not my kink."
She tried to back away but the cultists were behind her.
"Yeah you're going to let me leave, now."
Willow and cultists laughed. Looking to Tatty then to her chariot not far away, she made a quick decision. Grabbing Tatty by the shirt, no shoes on, she dragged them to the chariot and jumped on.
"Hurry Tatty, you're either coming with me or getting left behind."
Slapping the back of her seat she gave them a breath to choose, and then drove away fucked up as all Bel, back to the shore where the ferry would take her to Alistain.

The bittersweet bliss that was punctuated by her smile was swiftly interrupted by a loud retching thud. Mímir turned around, seeing the source of the sound. The burning effigy had fallen apart. Running from the wreckage, engulfed in flames, ran several figures screaming in unimaginable agony.

The woman who had welcomed them to their society with bountiful mirth only moments ago began to shout. The victims were newly officiated members of the Entente, they were being charged with sins against freedom. Mimir looked at Miki for answers, but she appeared to be as confused as themself. The cultists began to approach from all sides, with their eyes ravenously fixed on Mimir and Miki.

In a drunken panic Mimir tried for a weak spot, however, was quickly overrun. Apparently not everyone at the gathering had imbibed as much as they had. Struggling to break free from the scratching claws and grasping arms of the cultists, they momentarily caught sight of Miki in a similarly unfortunate state of capture. Returning their attention to the members grappling them, Mimir went into a blind rage, swinging their fists all around.

Somehow in their drunkenness Mimir was able to jab their hands into the pockets of one of the cultists in search of something resembling a weapon. What they obtained instead was something resembling a crude leather pouch. Throwing around more punches, they were finally able to break free only to be immediately grabbed by Miki.

She lead them to her chariot, offering them a ride. Mimir was in no position to say no, even if they had gotten to the brink of a little too much adventure. Although it was a suitable chariot for two, Mimir felt like they were going to fall off as she sped into the night’s horizon. They wrapped an arm around her for extra stability, they felt what seemed like a possible flinch as they did so. They shouted through the wind whipping by.

Thanks for bringing along for the ride. With all the excitement I forgot to introduce myself, or forgot if I did. Those drinks…anyways…I’m Mimir.

They stopped in what appeared to be a safe, isolated space. Mimir dug around in a pouch around their waist and managed to procure enough material to use for kindling. After building a small, but stable flame they pulled out their bag obtained during the brawl. It contained something that might lift their spirits, some intensely euphoric herbs. They flashed the open bag for Miki to see.

Want to keep the party going?

Dragging Tatty out of there may had been the best decision she made in a long time. Although the effigy capsized as they drove away the cult group was rounding up the last of the imbibers, who now could barely move from the drugged liquor, and tying them in the back of a wagon pulled by two chariots. The group got smaller and smaller in the distance with Miki hauling ass. Everything though on Miki's end was not okay. Her eyeballs felt like they were moving in her skull, they kept watering and she could barely see, finally her vision was that outside of herself, looking down, then a clear view of her own face, where she saw her eyeballs melting. Placing a shaky hand to her face she glanced in the mirror on her chariot, and saw there was still two eyes in her head. Unceremoniously she pulled over on the side of the river. They didn't make it yet to the ferry but she was too fucked up to drive them safely anymore. She sat down and spaced out for some time while Tatty gathered wood and made a fire. She also didn't hear anything said during the ride and didn't know this person but couldn't focus enough to watch them and make sure they weren't up to any funny business. That was when they asked,
"Want to keep the party going?"
And Miki was like,
"Yeah."
And pulled out her rolling papers for tobacco, not asking a single question where they got the herbs, but rolled them up and lit the cigarette on the fire for fun. She passed it to them first and felt in a word, relaxed and also more clear minded than before smoking.
"What was your name? Sorry I felt like my eyeballs melted out of my face back there."
Her tail swished behind her, tuft of hair with pieces of straw in it from the chariot ride. She proceeded to pull them out one by one as the conversation turned forward.

Mimir watched intently as she rolled the herbs up and passed the cigarette to them. They were having a blast, but was hoping it would balance out the strong drink still buzzing behind their eyes.

Sorry, the air was rushing by, and my mind is still racing as well. I’m Mimir. Thanks for the ride out of there. For the good company as well.

They took a long drag of their stolen contraband, blowing the smoke out slowly as she picked brush out of her tail. The swirling wisps made the activity seem strangely more sensual than it should have appeared. Mimir felt mesmerized. The excitement, alcohol, herb, and the fascinating stranger were all a lot for them to process. After all, they had only gone out that morning to scavenge for parts. They took another pull of the cigarette, handed it to her when it seemed there was a pause in her grooming, then laid down to look at the sky. It seemed to wobble and sway, they hoped the herb would smooth their vision soon. Especially before the two hit the water because it may cause them to get sick.

They really didn’t want the night to end. This was the first time in a long while that they felt alive. Really felt anything for that matter. The routines, the drawings of things half remembered, scavenging for their projects and customers….It was numbing. Barely a life at all considering they hadn’t had any major breakthroughs with their experiments as of late. This night was alive. It was warm. Miki emanated something special that kicked Mimir into feeling something. They let out a long breath. They knew it was time to get home soon. The cultists might come looking for them, and there would be customers tomorrow. They turned their head towards Miki.

We should probably make our way back to the ferry after we finish up here.

Mimir, that was their name. Miki quite liked "Tatty" though and in her inebriation told them that.
"Mimir, your name is Tatty. That's it. Though, Mimir is a nice name ain't it? I'll remember that."
They mentioned they should leave and Miki thought that was wise. Who knew if the cultists would come after them or what would happen if she fell asleep so far from home. Sleeping under the stars was normal for her, for the most part, but not her preferred and she felt very exposed here on the bank of the river.
"You're right, the ferry isn't far."
But her vision was still blurry and she felt weak in the knees. Still, after the cigarette was finished she got up and sat on her chariot, patting the seat behind her for them to get on. With a roar the chariot started up again and they were off down farther headed towards Alistain's ferry. When they arrived at the ferry dock the ferry wasn't here yet, they had a moment to chat. Miki decided then she wouldn't be going across the river but would leave Mimir there and head back to Traphole to be with Izul.
"This is where I disappear. You live in Alistain? Must be a commoner to find yourself in a seedy place like where we met, or bravely stupid. I frequent Traphole, do odd jobs here and there but mostly smithing. If you ever need me, find me. Can't be hard, I tend to stick out like a sore thumb. That Moroi flair..."
She smiled at him coyly.
