Taelian noticed the steadily firming grip, and did not flinch or recoil from it. Instead, he held Ford's hand equally as solidly, before loosing his grip and tracing his fingertips over the other man's palm. The Knight eyed his companion beside him, offering him a smooth, reassuring smile.

"Of course I have thought of that," Eloise replied, her hands settling back over her lap. A cat suddenly sprung from somewhere else in the lower floor, leaping onto the armrest and offering the half-Elf a quiet mewl, which she responded to with an absent stare. Eloise was the pinnacle of nobility: she wore herself with a constant high-esteem, of a like unseen by any others but those in the Daravinic Entente. The Candor had taught her how to present herself well, and how to always project power. Even though Taelian was stronger than her as a mage, she was infinitely his superior, and that was made clear by every detail of her body language and even her position in the environment.

"We play a fine balance here, Ser Edevane. The Lords of this realm, and all of these scattered realms, do not want to see us as anything but an asset to them. By stoking positive affections with the people, we risk the gentry's mistrust; they may believe we are here to turn the people against them, or become beloved public figures to avoid persecution. We quickly become a liability, the more influence we acquire outside of the courts. Past attempts to endear ourselves with the people of Tyrclaid have seen some of our members to the gallows for public execution. We will not make that mistake again." The woman reached out to stroke the white-furred cat, which pressed its head into her hand, closing its eyes and purring. "And please -- I imagine you are calling me madame because I am from the Empire, but I am Lady now. I do not tie myself to my Daravinic heritage any longer." She tipped her head.

Taelian said little to that; it wasn't as if he could disagree. Eloise was right -- they had to weigh public perception with that of the nobility's trust, which was ultimately more important to their survival. The woman planned on influencing the public in much more subtle ways, which was why men like Ford were joining their ranks: they could use more sophisticated techniques to subconsciously alter the feelings of millions, rather than risking the ire of local Earls town-by-town.

"I have little more to say. Taelian -- have you told Ford of our policy about your heritage?" she asked.

The man shook his head, turning to his lover to speak. "Don't tell anyone," he muttered. "No one can know I'm a Draedan. If they know, they will come for me, for you, and for our children. Divine Sparks are the most valuable resource on Atharen, and they can be extracted. There's already a theory circulating that many of Grisic's great inventions are powered by them... thus the fervor to hunt us."

The Umpire nodded. "Correct. Taelian talks up a storm, but he has not publicly revealed his identity, nor should he. The return of the Gods may change things, but perhaps it may also change things for the worse. We cannot know yet. Until we have deliberated on the public status of Taelian's heritage further, tell no one. I cannot warn you strongly enough."

Ford simply did not agree with what was being said. Nobility held the power for the time being, but he had heard and studied too much of what the people truly felt regarding a noble’s decision. There was a disconnect between the two and it was difficult as it seemed the pair of them were of the same mind. Perhaps it was also due to him simply not being a noble, he didn’t think like one, which was an issue. An issue to deal with later when he was better prepared to come to that subject and address it. “Lady de Lyonesse… My apologies for the mix up and I will be sure to not make that mistake again.”

Though if anything had bothered Ford from the feelings of impending negativity from thinking about the meeting with Eloise, to the words she had chosen to impart upon him to make him feel any form of error had been made upon his relationship to Taelian… One thing bothered him to his core. It was foolish, stupid even that for the first time in their meeting, that polite face broke and both brows rose in a mixture of sheer curiosity and surprise.

“With all due respect Lady de Lyonesse… My personal life with Taelian is nobody else’s business. I understand the public implications of him marrying someone who is not a noble, not so rich to be influential and has no renown as a warrior or a mage. However, as a man born of human heritage, I do have honor and respect. It had never once occurred for me to tell anyone, anything about Taelian, whether it be his heritage, how much pride he takes in being the first to act, or the feats he has achieved in either of his lives. I may not be a powerful mage like either one of you, and I may not have the blood on my hands and staining my history to show my prowess as a warrior. But I do have an education and regardless of my upbringing, I do have compassion. It is appreciated, but unneeded for either of you...” A glance slide over to the side in Taelian’s direction, not quite looking to him for a moment, before looking back to Eloise. “…to tell me how precious he is. I would never dream of divulging anything I have learned to anyone. For that, you have my word as a man, and as his Arlaed.”

Ford’s hand had not moved when both Taelian and Eloise had instructed him to not tell anyone of his heritage. The blonde was slightly annoyed at the situation, but quickly realized his brows had risen perhaps too high and forced them to lower and the smile had faded, but to more of a polite ghost of a smile rather than anything full of mirth or happiness.

It wasn't difficult to determine that Ford was agitated, even before he spoke and made that clear: the two of them had that sort of connection, and Taelian could tell both by the subtle changes to his demeanor and by some strange empathic connection they seemed to share. When Ford finally made clear his discomfort at their joint cautioning of him, Eloise sat and stared quietly, while Taelian uncomfortably moved about in his seat. The Knight was playing his own fine balance, between keeping relations collegial between himself and Eloise, and ensuring his husband's happiness. It was clear he was failing to do either.

"This is not a matter of your marriage to Taelian: this is a matter of the life and death of your family, our organization, and the health of the Kingdom of Lorien. You are a private citizen if you wish to be, but your husband is not. Consider me your advisor, and advocate," the woman replied pointedly. It was clear she did not intend to relent or to apologize; she was the authority in the room, and Ford was her employee. That distinction was one she would not surrender, regardless of the man's discomfort, or displeasure.

Taelian curled his lips, before quickly standing up. "Alright. Well, I'd like to consider this meeting adjourned for the moment; there's nothing more to be said. Eloise, would you like me to take you back with Teras, or are you content to return to Westfalen with Resonance?"

The woman stood, her hands being brought together behind her back. "I will return my own way, thank you. It was my sincerest pleasure to meet you and your third husband. I will admit before I leave: I thought for a moment, upon seeing him, that Riven had returned and I almost embraced him in enthusiasm. Your type is very apparent."

The Knight looked back at her, coolly, a snag catching the corner of his lip. "Ford is someone I love very dearly. If you would, I would prefer it if you would stop making critique about our marriage, stop comparing him to my dead lover, and stop emphasizing his status as my 'new' lover. He and I are expecting children, we have bonded as Arlaed, and we will be together for the rest of our eternal lives. If you continue to demean or derogate him, I will leave the Covenant and not look back. Do you understand me, Eloise?"

She grimaced. "I don't understand a lot about you, Taelian, but I believe in your ability to be rash and impulsive. So... yes, I understand you. Be well, the both of you." With that, she left the lounge, a whistling wind circling around her before releasing into the jingle of a chime once more; a portal broke through the plane before her in the foyer, and the woman stepped through it, gone in a moment.

Taelian clenched his fist; his features tensed with apparent, growing rage. "Bitch," he spat. "I won't let her disrespect you, anymore. I won't. That was not right."

Ford had made sure to not allow his emotions to get the best of him. Except for the raise of brows and the words assuring Taelian’s privacy and trust would never be broken if Ford could help it. Ford did not allow his demeanor to change, not this time. And as he listened to her, he did bow his head as it was apparent, she was finished with the conversation as Taelian was also ending it. Watching her in silence as she walked away, and she assured Taelian she would take herself home the same way she had arrived. The comments thought weighed on him. Not to the point that the Griscian man showed any outward emotion regarding it.

It was admirable, the way Taelian spoke up for him, but it was not loss upon Ford, that he did not have the stamina in terms of social fortitude that either one of the present noble persons had. That would change, though, eventually. As that piercing whistle rang out after her last comments, Ford’s gaze remained in the now empty direction that Eloise had been in. Taelian’s rage was noted, and he understood the rage, but Ford did not feel rage, or even hatred for Eloise.

Silence befell Ford as it was more than noticeable, he had thoughts going through his head. He needed to think on some things, to evaluate things and to figure out the direction he was going to move from that point forward. He of course had Taelian and eventually, their kids would be born, but there was much more to have between the most significant things in his life happening and the items Eloise had been very adamant about pointing out.

It took Ford a moment to gather his faculties compartmentalizing his emotions for the time being before that ever-shining smile came back to his features. “I would expect no less from the person you directly report to. You are her asset, her greatest weapon. She is only thinking of protecting the Covenant’s assets and her potential power to wield. I am the unexpected variable that has turned everything on its side.”

Pulling Taelian’s hand that he had yet to let go of, he pulled a little on Taelian and moved himself, so they were standing facing one another. Gently, he pressed his chest against the other’s and his free hand raised to hold to the back of Taelian’s head and pulled him so Taelian’s head, if his lover allowed, to rest his head against his shoulder. “I will work hard and make it, so I am not a weakness.” Resting his head against Taelian’s. he took in a deep breath and let it out, his eyes falling to look behind Taelian and downward to the floor. “I will prove myself in every way I have to. You will not have a weak husband. I will jump through every hoop she has for me. I want to be here, with you. Even if it is grueling, I cannot think of anywhere else I would rather be.”

“Try your best to not be angry. I know it is not ideal, I’ll mat it better, promise. You just continue to be the amazing man that you are.”

Turning his face, he nuzzled into his husband’s form, sneaking his mouth between that grey suit and flesh and kissed his lover’s skin softly with a warm, billowing breath against the kissed portion of his skin.

“It will be okay.”

Taelian frowned, his lips curving downward as his face buried into the crook between Ford's shoulder and neck. The man breathed against him, softly, wrapping his forearms around the small of his back and clinging, his grip unrelenting and needy. Taelian rarely liked to express emotion in this way, but he was angry. He had allowed his lover to be disrespected, and he had learned that Eloise would not in fact be cordial to them. He wanted things to go well, and to be smooth, but things would need to be more difficult... and he didn't want that for Ford, or for himself.

"You are not a weakness," the man said in a resounding, affectionate pitch. He moved to kiss the corner of his husband's neck. "You are my strength. I've needed you for longer than you know... and I'm not letting anything wedge us. I'm not letting you die, I'm not letting anyone be cruel to you." Another kiss followed, the man's lips brushing against Ford's skin as he further reassured him. I cannot think of anywhere else I would rather be.

"I can think of a place," Taelian muttered in return. "That home we'll buy together -- wherever it is -- where we can be alone. I don't want to be here much longer, I don't want to put all of this weight onto you. Come Frost, we'll move out once I've started acquiring revenue from the cannery. We can start somewhat renewed, somewhere else. Not just a room to ourselves... but a plot of land, a home, a forest. I want that, a great deal."

He knew it would be okay. As long as Ford was there, it would all be fine. Taelian had no doubts of that, and as his husband kissed and breathed against his skin, the man pulled in his features so they could meet face-to-face, lip-to-lip. He pressed against him with a chaste kiss that he gently pulled away from, only to meet his husband's handsome blue eyes.

"Let's go to our room," he whispered. "We can relax there a while, and figure out what to do next. I'd rather not be down here any longer."
