☠ I was never one for large gatherings, let alone parties. My father and his medical guild were having some sort of gathering in celebration of something, whatever it was I would never know nor did I want to. I was unfortunately forced to attend out of familial obligation.
Leaning against the edge of the balcony, I had the perfect view, able to see the comings and goings of guests from all over the city. A calm yet intrigued smirk played on my face, my crystal blue eyes darting from person to person, drinking in any hand gestures and body language, to the facial expressions of those I could manage to see. It was fun watching the interactions of such well-established citizens, a nice change of pace I could say at least, as I was used to dealing with the lives of those unfortunate enough to become ill.
Speaking of my patients, I had eyes on several from both the clinic in Lower Nivenhain and here from where I was perched. Among the sea of guests, the entertainment for the night seemed to be among them as well. Jesters of some sort, more accurately harlequin, but in particular seemed to catch my focus. They were staring at me, like directly at me, and for a moment it unnerved me. My father was coming from my left and for a quick second I turned to look at him, but upon returning my gaze to the harlequin, they were gone.
I turned to face him and he seemed to be followed by Cullen, who was dressed in a rather nice ensemble, courtesy of my father of course. "Something the matter Cyrus?" he posed, looking down at the sea of people below. I shook my head to advert from the question. "Are you enjoying the festivities tonight?" he asked, coming to stand beside me as he placed a hand on my shoulder.
"For the most part, but I'm not entirely sure why it was so important I be here tonight?" I asked, turning my gaze to the sea of people as well. "Dont worry It will become clear to you before the night is over." he answered in the cryptic way he had always done. A waitress came to us, drinks in hand as she came to us.
Taking them we clang them together as he motioned me to follow him to the grand stairwell. There we were joined by four other figures one of which was the chief of medicine Ellisan. I was curious as to who the other three were but they seemed very important and close to my father. With a tingling of my father's glass, he delivered a speech to the masses below.
"Good evening and thank you to everyone who has come out to attend. I, as some of you may now, am Nicoli Von Faust, head of the guild medical science here in Essen and among some of the leading authorities of necromantic research. I am also a good friend of many of you here tonight and am honored to be the one to address you all tonight.
Tonight we celebrate another year of progress and advancement in both medicine and the arcane. I am grateful to be apart of this organization, more so I am grateful to be able to give back to a community, a city, that has embraced me when for a long time I refused to embrace them back. I am grateful to be able to provide medical assistance to those who can not afford a regular doctor.
As such tonight is for you all, as my token of appreciation to the hard work you all have come and given to our guild this past year, and for another year and more to come."
A round of applause cascaded the entirety of the ballroom as my father along with the four figures approached me. "Everyone this is my son as you know. Cyrus these are my colleagues." he spoke, gesturing toward the four individuals behind him. "You are already acquainted with Lady Ellisan, and to her left is Lady Veronica Oshenvelk, and to her left is Xiang, and the other male at his left is Amir Najida." he introduced, each person bowing or curtseying at their introduction.
"it is a pleasure to meet you all." I acknowledge, feeling as though they were all gauging me, sizing me up for some reason. It was not verbal, but they all exchanged a look that I could only read as a look of approval amongst themselves. I started to fear exactly what I had just gotten myself into.
"Come Cyrus there is something we wish to discuss with you....away from prying eyes and ears." he whispered as he walked past me, the others he had introduced following behind him. With a sigh, I finished my glass of wine and set it on the banister of the balcony, and as I looked out at the guest below, there they were, that harlequin from earlier, looking dead at me from below only this time they waved to me.
I found that odd, and for some reason, call it intuition, it didn't sit well with me at all. I let it be for now, but my guard was slowly raised. Following behind my father and his colleagues we came to the top floor of the hospital, in the Tower of Death as it was called, where his office was.
Once there the five of them stood in front of me, conversing amongst themselves, giving me side glances every once and awhile. "is anyone going to explain why I had to come to this party?" i inquired, obviously impatient for an answer from someone. The group turned and looked at me.
"To the masses below we are simply a medical science guild as you know, but that, to be rather blunt is a front. We are more than your mere guild. We are a cabal, an organization.......a syndicate of sorts if you will. We specialize in actions and endeavors that others wouldn't or can't dirty their hands to do." he began taking a moment to gather his words once more.
"Given your unique hobbies, we feel your talents would be far more useful to us, plus we can advert the prying eyes of authorities away from you and your duties." he continued. "Duties?" I asked, confused as to what he meant.
"Yes, as we are extending to you a membership to our little "family". I've wanted to bring you in for a long time now, but with things the way they are now and where they are heading, I can't afford to allow you to get caught up in the mess to come. With that said, we wish to grant you the rank known as the Elusive One. This allows you to move with complete autonomy within our organization, and with the authority of a high ranking member. All we ask in return is that if the need for your help arises, you answer without question. Does that sound doable to you my son?" he offered.
"You ask as if I have a choice father." I retorted with a smirk, which caused him and the others to chuckle. "True enough, this was just a formality, as I would have just made you join regardless. I felt it was better to allow you the chance to have a choice even if there wasn't one to be had." he reminded.
With that the group congratulated me and we began to discuss what my role within this "syndicate" actually entailed. However, the scream of one of the attendees came from down the hall. We all burst from the room to see what the commotion was. The sounds of a scuffle could be heard down on the second floor, and we all came running down the stairs.
One of the rooms had the doors open and I could visibly see blood on the floor. Wasting no time we reached the room in question to find Cullen and......."You!?" I roared seeing the unnerving harlequin from earlier locking blades with Cullen. The young man's arm was bleeding, and it seemed the harlequin was injured as well.
The masked clown was holding on to something, and Veronica was quick to point it out. "He has the map, you must not allow him to leave with that at any cost!" she shouted, to which the harlequin turned his head at her and with a kick forced Cullen into the table behind him. They must have realized they were outnumbered as both myself and Amir had our weapons drawn.
Seeing no other way out the intruder ran to the nearest window and crashed through it. Running behind him I could find any trace of them whoever they were. "Dammit! how did he get past our people?" my father questioned. "What is so important about that map?" I asked, Veronica moving to where the case it was residing in was.
"It was a map to what we believed to be a repository of ancient and possibly forbidden knowledge that was rumored to have been built here long before Lorien was Lorien. It is imperative we retrieve that map." she explained. My father came to stand next to me, placing a hand on my shoulder. "You at least have your first assignment now, find whoever is responsible for this, and retrieve that map at all cost" he said patting my shoulder, as armed men and woman dressed in black came into the room, Amir barking orders.
All I could do is stare out the broken window, sighing as Im sure this was more than I bargined for. ☠
