Jolynn raised an eyebrow as the young redhead went to work on the foremen. She did it with a sense of assertiveness that would have made her Great Aunt proud.
As the started back, Jolynn walked still mentally a little out. The magic that she used did tax her physically.

As they walked Jolynn talked about the area and what could be done to improve things.

That lot could be a park. Over there that building could be repaired. They came to a small fountain and Jolynn watched a few children playing in the water. The fountain was not a grand fountain like the marble ones where the mages lived. It was smaller, big enough for people to draw buckets of water and for horses to drink from.

"We need a bigger fountain and a bathhouse too," she added.

"I studied about creating buildings, bridges, walls and piers," Jolynn said.
"You have to be good with stone and dirt for that," she said smiling.
"I can work stone too," She added,
Then said, "I want to put a wall around these blocks and then make my estate over there.
She nodded in a direction.
" Some can work dirt and sand, but that is confusing to me," she added.

As they got close, Jolynn bought some meat cooking from a vendor heading over to the mine about half-a-mile away.
She handed two skewers to Vinsue.

"I am sorry, I have been doing all the talking," she added.

Just before she left the forge she grabbed her own bag and strapped it on. Knowing she would not be back at this forge today she made sure to collect everything. She even put the newly bought stuff and put it in her bag.

As Jolynn talked Vinsue looked and listened. She could see a playground with kids running around and playing. She could see the ruin of buildings left unrepaired and could imagine what they could be. She could see the progress of the fountain.

It was nice to see a mage that cared to improve the world of the less fortunate. It actually brought a lot of questions to mind. Like why a mage was living in the slums. Why did she not move to join the higher classes? But she decided not to ask such personal questions. As sometimes it's better not to know.

Vinsue nodded as she continued talking of stone and walls. And gladly took the food when offered. "No need to apologize. As a newcomer I find it nice to see you care about this place." She would take a bite of one of the skewers. Part of the adventure of leaving home included trying new foods. Some food was disgusting but this was delicious.

"Kinda think that when you improve the city, adding a community garden would be nice." Vinsue said. "And I think someone who can work metal with such skill can master dirt and sand as both are much softer."

"But you definitely should wait to try and work any more magic till you feel better."

Jolynn smiled as Vinsue took the meat and ate.

"The garden seems like a good idea.," Jolynn said.
Turning to look around she noticed there was a group following them.
"Dirt and sand are not ordered like the other materials..." She said with a bit of a nervous look on her face.

Looking down she said, "I think we are being followed."

Her instincts were to turn and "Mage down" the crowd. She had magical power and a family name to go with it. She had survived initiation which was much scarier than a crowd of people.
She also wanted to be accepted by these people and wanted them to be her people. Being a mage, a noble, and a new resident she realized she could not run. Though walking away very quickly would be acceptable option.

She looked at Vinsue for her opinion and for support.
"I do not see weapons or flaming torches," she said turning her back to the crowd building.
"My Great Aunt would tell me to take control of the crowd and tell them how things are going to be," Jolynn said before taking a bite of meat from the skewer.
"She can throw fire around and that gets some respect quickly," Jolynn said stuffing more meat into her mouth. She did not want to be hungry if she needed to throw magic around.
She could make a nice stone wall, or a little tower.. Not really helpful at the moment.

"Do you have suggestions?" She asked.

"Dirt and sand are also not pure material but a mix of the basics of many." She said, agreeing with Jolynn. She had not attempted either before but could understand why they would be difficult.

When the growing crowd of people following them was brought up, she turned just enough to see them. She did not have experience with this kind of thing. Her instincts were to run but she knew running was not the best option at the moment. She considered their options. "Probably best to see what they have to say. If talking falls, you can make them down, though most don't like that." Vinsue said in a whisper. She only had the mark; she did not have any experience with magic. She was almost certain her mark was fully covered up.

She took a deep breath and turned fully facing the 13 or so people that had followed them. The man she had bossed around in the shop was among them with a scowl. Most of the group seemed more curious than anything else.

“Why are you following us?” Vinsue said, crossing her arms.

“Hurd a mage was in town.” a man said as he came from the shadows of the ally. He kept his head down. Hand on hat for dramatic effect.

“Decided to see if the rumor was true.” he lifted his head dropping his hand. “And to find out why. Your kind don’t come here without wanting to cause trouble.” he stepped to the front of the crowd. “So tell us, why are you here?” he said after he crossed his arms and locked eyes with Jolynn.

There were thirteen people in the crowd. Many of then were large working men.
Vinsue started the conversation.

His body language was respectful and a bit passive.

"I have come to look for some work at the mine," Jolynn said causing some conversation in the ranks.
Jolynn did not look like she could swing a pickaxe or shovel for very long. Miners were a superstitious log and female Sil'Norai mages and mines were a bad mix worse than a black cat in a mine. Black cats in the mine meant someone would die. Mages tended to be helpful enough to cause the ground to shift which could cause a cave-in.

"I am not going in the mine. I am going to sorting ore samples into parts.." she said.
This caused the rumble to get a bit louder.
"In a lab and not at the mine.. " she added.

She could read the tone of the conversation behind the leader.

Aware of the Jingoism, Jolynn treaded carefully.
"I would like to become the Valran for the neighborhood," she said.

This was a big statement to make, and this too got a reaction.
"Listen to me, please," she said with some energy.

"What would it be like if the roads were stone instead of mud? Or to have walls and a garden where we could grow foods? What if someone cared enough to take down the buildings that are falling apart? What if we got a healer and a tutor so your children had a better chance with the initiation?" she asked.

She looked at then each in the eyes,

Then she said, "I want to help you improve your lives and mine as well,"

For progress sake, Vinsue thought as Jolynn stated why she was here. She kept talking and by doing so made the crowd grow with unease. Then she said the one thing that the crowd feared the most. The one thing Vinsue was not ready for. Something that was best not said beside someone recently tied to a power swap. She planned on becoming the Valran.

Vinsue could feel the discomfort of an outsider pointing out what they thought was wrong. And personally felt the unease of the mear thought of initiating kids. She had only barely survived the initiation herself. Something she once vowed to never do back when she was just a kid and her best friend died. Vinsue held her breath as she awaited the response from the group.

“If you’ll let us. We can help make this place safer and more functional. We want to work with you to do this. She does not want to be a feared tyrant. She wants to help,” Vinsue said.

To Vinsue it seemed the crowd was not going to have any part of this. The leader on the other hand seemed to be more inclined to listen. "Give us a trial period. 2 weeks to make an improvement. If we fell or anyone gets hurt do to what we do we will leave."

The leader looked back at the group then gave a slight nod. "One week." He then looked up at the mage "first sign of trouble and you immediately leave."
