PETTY BITTERCRESS

Introduction
Spiraling limbs of pale wood jut from the ground where this plant is rooted, almost akin to the main stalk of a common bush or a shrub, but without leaves and twigs. Instead, the plant bares tall, bright pink anemone-like stalks that appear rigid and stiff in the cold winds.

Biology
The wood that makes its body is hard and brittle; it crumbles like ash and breaks apart with general ease, making it difficult to harvest from without the utmost care. The pink stems that grow from the tips of its branches withdraw in the late glade and remain lost all the way through to mid-ash, which makes it hard to identify. The pink stems are curiously even larger and grow back faster in the frost. Small, yellow, floral-like patterns rest at the top of each stem. They're cold to the touch, rubbery, and stretch far before they snap and return to their original shape in a sponge-like fashion.

Location
The plant grows plentifully on soil that's rich with lorianum, or over potential high-density veins of the mineral. It's more common in meadows and appears in large clusters wherever it's seen; it's uncommon to encounter a solitary bittercress in the wild.

Uses
The body of the plant has virtually no uses in construction or architecture as it's far too brittle to work with, but it does burn easily, which makes for a decent firestarter when broken into smaller clumps. Meanwhile, the stalk itself has uses in the field of medicine as a mild anesthetic. In its raw form, it can induce a state of light relaxation (not paralysis) in the consumer as well as ease them into a light sleep. This is useful for sufferers of chronic pain, or for those that have trouble falling asleep at night. However, when the stem is ground up and fermented, it becomes a potent ingestible drug in the form of a deep purple fluid, fermenting bittercress is illegal in Lorien, due to the harmful effects the product has on the body and psyche alike.

The drug is bitter in taste and, and induces a state of complete and utter euphoria. The body is made to relax to the point of being immobile. Some users have been known to choke on their own tongues or drown in their vomit as a result of using the drug alone. The drug is mildly addictive, if only for its ability to help its users unwind without fail, though it does cause damage to the liver and stomach lining with prolonged and continued use.

Because of its potent and often lethal effects, the drug is often watered down with natural sweeteners like honey or sugar and milk, which is where its nickname 'Bittersweet' derives from.
