16th of Ash, Year 4621 and 48th of Searing, Year 4620

Before him lingered a tower -- a tower of neurons, connected together by synapses. Glowing a dimming red, it vibrated color softly, spreading outward through a quiet pulsation. "A dyin' memory," he whispered, stroking his fingertips along the edge of the Engram, which seemed to convulse slightly at his touch. He had never used Junction before, but wielding it now would be simple. All he had to do was touch the Engram with the right configuration of ether suffused into his hand, and that would be all. It couldn't have been -- wasn't, too different from Guidance. As with anything, though, he needed to be careful in how he interacted with his mind. If he made a mistake, and dimmed it on accident and by too much, the memory could be lost forever.

He focused. Holding his hand against the Engram, he felt it tingle and vibrate around his fingers, his mind assailed by energy as his form vibrated. Sound itself distorted around him, and merely touching the Engram with ether infused played the shattered inklings that he still had of that memory -- whatever dull remnant still remained. He needed only to piece those fragments together, and fill in the blanks by reigniting that distant part of his mind.

He focused, and added more ether. It hurt. He could feel Strain even within his sleeping thoughts; that pain was unmistakable. His chest jumped upward from within the bed, and he heaved. But it was working. The Engram glowed a brighter red; he had gotten the configuration correct after all. As painful as it was, he had to continue pushing through.

Those fragmented memories tore in and out of his thoughts, flickering as the empty buzzing of noise filled his ears. Words from that night flooded in: Jack, the Wurm, Breakers, everyone, I can't--

"My God..." he breathed. The Engram lit up like a beacon. He had done it; the memory was restored. "Okay," Jack whispered. "Go time."

"Hey, hey, Jack!" the man yelled. "Quit dozin' off. We're in Rustbucket, not Emmanuel's ball-sack shaped enclave or whatever."

"Huh...?" he whispered, half-lidded eyes slowly opening as he glanced all around him. They were at a bar -- a somewhat beefy woman sat before them with a drink menu on offer, with patrons around the iron surface and sequestered into their own table sections around it. Some man was playing an instrument he had never seen before, in the corner.

"That's a Duduk," Lucas said. "It's from Khadai -- and I think the far ends of South Daravin, by Zirean. They like to compete over who invented it, but... guess we'll never know, huh?"

He smiled faintly. "It's beautiful, Lucas. Like... really beautiful."

"I know," he nodded. "That's the benefit about places like this; a convergence of cultures. Not just Badlanders. Some people come here in pilgrimage -- to worship the ether, they say. They even drink the radioactive waters."

He blinked, coming fully to as he rattled his head for a moment. "That's disgustin'," Jack yawned. "Hey, hey," he tipped his head. "That's Natalya Ainsforza. Koltoskan woman, right? Heard she's the new bigshot trader down here. Sellin' a ton of Lever-Actions from her home region."

"Yeah, think that's her," Lucas nodded, pressing his lips in thought. "Not entirely sure. Well, no matter. You know what we're here for." Right. They were there to tell Daniel's family the news of his death. It was... a long time coming. He had gone from the world so long ago.

There was a drift of sand blowing through, everyone shielding their faces with their hands as they raised their hoods to protect them. Jack and Lucas staggered through the sands, slowly approaching Daniel's family-home step-by-step. Finally, as they made it to the door, the tan-skinned man took a deep breath and raised his fist to knock. Before he could land it, the metal slide opened and a pair of blue eyes met his, before a middle-aged woman opened the door and beckoned the two inside.

"You are here for me?" she said, extending her arm out beside her to gesture them to the home's small lounge. "Come. I have known you would arrive."

His eyes narrowed for a moment, glancing toward Lucas as if to cast his judgment. The man tried not to look Jack back in the eye -- maybe to pay his respects, or maybe because he was anxious. Jack decided he would try not to be... so harsh. This was Daniel's mother. The mother of the man he loved more than life, even now.

"...Miss," Lucas began, "...I'm Lucas Montagne, this is Jack Perea. Jack's... sorta like your son-in-law. He and Daniel agreed to marry; so, I suppose it's about time you two met, yeah?"

The woman stared towards Jack, eyeing him up and down. A small frown tugged at the corner of her lips, as she sighed. Nodding, she took a seat on the chair opposite the two of them, as each man lowered to lay against the withering fabric of the chair.

"Tell me, Jack... what has become of my son?"

An immediate tug in his chest. The woman went for the throat.

"I, ah..."

"I have not encountered him in my dreams of late. I always used to -- near every night, I would find him, and I would help him remember things. I know you, Jack; I encountered you many times in Daniel and my shared dreams."

She was a Remnomancer, then. The thought almost made him blush -- the things she must have seen. Daniel and his life together, exposed, open to be viewed from within his defenseless mind. The thought was unsettling.

"I'm sorry, misses Blanchet. Daniel's... he's..."

"I thought as much," she concluded, bringing her hands together as her posture straightened, a deep sigh escaping her lips. "That will be all, then. Good day to both of you. You may leave."

"Wha--" Jack paused, a sudden, sorrowful expression filling his features. Lucas gripped his chest with his hand, bidding him to stop and calm. To let him speak instead.

"Misses Blanchet -- please. We came all this way to see you. Jack... wanted to speak to you about Daniel, and their relationship together. To have a connection with you, as the mother of his late husband; as the husband of your late son. Please -- it would mean so much to him if..."

"No, I don't think so," the woman said, coldly. "You waited more than a Season's length to come see me. Why is that, Jack?"

He frowned, shaking his head. "Because... because it was difficult to get here. We were compromised, and had to crawl our way out of the mud. After Daniel died, one bad thing came after another. If I left, I would've had no home to come back to. And, I... I couldn't face his death at the time. Not back then."

She shook her head. "So you left a mother in uncertain mourning for a third of a year instead. You said you were not ready to face his death back then -- well, you withheld my closure from me all the way until now. I need my chance too, Jack. So get the fuck OUT!"

So they did. The two left, grim looks across their features, as each man hung their head heavy and sighed out. Jack began to quiver, for a time, nearing on tears. If it wasn't for the torrent of dust spraying across the streets, he would've let go then and there. Instead, he quietly sniffled as Lucas led him back to their hovel outside of the inn, so the two could wait out the storm. Some of the grains might have been radioactive, corrupted; it was unwise to allow exposure to them, even so far from the coast.

Once they arrived in their room, the man just dropped his things and frowned, bringing himself to the bed before defeatedly laying down. "I can't believe she..."

Lucas took a seat next to him, biting at his gum from within his cheek. "She's just, ah... grieving. We all have our own way, right? Some people get sad, some people give up and fall apart, some people distract themselves with other things... and some get angry. That's her method, I guess; she's lashing out. Give her time."

"We can't just give her time," he said, shaking his head. "We can't be here that long. We need to go back to Scythe. She should know that -- coming all this way through the Badlands, how much of a fuckin' joy ride does she think we had? We risked death. All for that. All to be made to feel guilty over something I had no damn control over."

"I know, Jack," he said. "I know. Let's give it another day and try again. But... even if things don't work out, I want to remind you; you were in love with Daniel, not his fuckin' family. You don't need his mother to love you. You had your own relationship to him, special and unique. And that's what matters."

"You're right, Lucas," he sniffled. "...Thank you."

The other man rose from the bed, passing the other a smile as he started to rummage through his belongings, seeing what to make the two of them for dinner, now that the evening was looming. "No issue, Jack," the man said, nodding his head. "You know you and I are like brothers. Always."

"...Always."
