The Way, Part Two

4th of Ash, Year 4621

It was that dream again. The desert, out in the distance, being overlooked by him and another man as they stared out over the balcony of a great, onyx-colored tower. Given the events of the night before, he almost would have assumed that the man beside him was Carlos... but no, as always, his face was indistinguishable. He rarely ever spoke, but when he did... it was always some sort of question. Like he was Jack's better voice; that of reason, of sense, of truth.

"So this is my mindscape, huh...?" he pondered to himself. He had Voyaged into it not long ago. Most of his experience with Remnant had been diving through his own mind, or Dreamdiving as it was called. This place... it was deeply familiar to him now, and recently, it had stopped changing as much as it did before. There used to be all of these strange valleys out in the distance, places filled with revelry, doubt or fear; now, it was just these dunes, these towers, and a great spire out in the distance.

It looked like the Free Access Tower... but it wasn't that. It was taller, more imposing. Utterly black, like this one, and forged out of these almost organic-looking cords. Cords that careened out into everything; they threaded through the sands, burrowing deep beneath them, sometimes revealed as the dunes shifted via the wind. He imagined himself, sometimes, staring down below from atop that spire's great height. Looking out into everything, ready to fall. Held back by nothing but the fear of expectation, of what uncertain, painful fate awaited him below.

"I'm goin' to die in this place," he whispered. "This mind... it's goin' to be my tomb. How long'll it be until I'm jerkin' around, not breathin'? Seasons... months? Gonna go faster than my old man."

"There's another option," whispered that man, shadowy and uncertain in color. He noticed some time ago that he couldn't even look up at him -- every time he tried to view his face, his vision would snap over to some other thing. Never the place he wanted to look. "You can fix your mind, Jacques. You even know how."

"How?" he frowned.

"Move beyond it all. Look to the path in the distance."

Jack's eyes cast down, out towards the foot of the tower... the sands at its base, the people on their knees, begging at the gate to be allowed inside. What was this place; what were these places? Pylons, stretching out towards the sky? How did he know that? What even was a 'Pylon', after all?

"I...I'm..."

He began to cry. Shameful. Biting his lower lip, he covered his eyes with his palm, keeping his head lowered as his nostrils flared, sniveled and sniffled, the lower lids of his eyes wet with tears. He wiped any off before it could stream down his cheeks.

"I'm my own person. I don' wanna give that up and become somethin' else."

"You wouldn't," the man said quietly, approaching him and placing a hand against his shoulder. It felt... intense. Not cold or warm, or even physical. The touch itself was psychological. It stimulated his mind. "You would become something more, Jack. A man powerful enough to lead your own future. A mind great enough to cull those impurities, to live in a state of total awareness and control."

"There's nothin' I wouldn' do, to..."

. . .

"Jack, awaken. Your training begins today--"

. . .

"Skylines, like nothing you've never seen before 'em, spreading out 'til they reach the clouds. They say that about Arlain. Is it true?"

"Yes," he whispered. "It's true."

A sudden gasp. He awoke feverishly, sweat running down his brow as his hand shook uncontrollably. He had been dreaming for far too long; Dreamdiving had begun to take a toll on him, sapping him of his ether. Strain was kicking in, sending a sharp pain through his back and leading him to convulse. "Okay, okay..." he whispered, voice broken. "I get it. Enough sleepin'." He loathed that part of Remnant. It wasn't like he had a choice. He couldn't just decide not to Dreamdive; it followed him into every night.

The man looked around, sitting up straight against the headrest. He had nothing but a pair of linen boxers on, his nickel-lead necklace linked around his neck. Gripping the circular shape at the end, he twirled it within his fingers, eyes slowly opening and shutting as a sudden yawn escaped his lips. "New day," he said. "New day."

Crawling out of bed, he stretched out his arms and legs, reaching into his closet to rummage through the mess of clothes he had laying around in there. Most of them needed a good wash, though that was difficult without water. Things had not been so fortunate for them lately as to be able to replace the water in their basin. Everything was growing more and more dire.

Hours passed. Eventually, he was ready, leaning against the back of the wall in the foyer, arms crossed over his chest. Everyone was gathered around, Emmanuel standing tall at the center with a half-scowl marring his lips, as usual in recent days. His scar had started to heal pretty well -- sort of looked attractive, even, resting on his cheek. Jack remembered back when he was a teenager; back before he became all 'scary' and commanderial.

"Nebron, Kalia and Leros are the three stars that guided us here. We will go the other direction -- towards Haith, Ixos and Thane. The journey should last us four days. Through our Grakain, we have enough water to go on for that long. We can package enough food for around half of the journey. After that, we'll need to hunt. If the worst things fall, we will need to subsist on Wurm. If we can find one."

Everyone suddenly made a sound of... distaste. Jack couldn't blame them. Wurm was fucking disgusting.

Emmanuel didn't bother commenting on their distaste. As usual. "We're going to have a lead scout group do some forward observation, make sure Iron Moon or any other group hasn't caught wind of us; isn't circling around us. That group will be Jack, Carlos and Alice," he explained. Alice immediately grunted... and Jack couldn't blame her. Putting the two people least friendly to one another in the entire gang in such important roles... he wasn't certain that it was wise. Carlos was a wild card, too. He had just been 'rejected' by Jack, though it was more like Jack hadn't said anything. He wasn't really sure how to feel, after all.

"Okay," he merely responded. "Yeah, sure."

Carlos blew empty air. He wasn't sure how to feel about it, considering. Jack got the impression that he didn't really mind being placed with him, though. There was no way the crush vanished, just like that. Alice, though... she was already sharpening her weapons. He couldn't help but to consider that a threat. She was on the verge of betraying Scythe--that much was clear. He'd seen less overt build-up than whatever bullshit posturing she was doing, before.

"Okay. Now, I know you're all aware of the seven we recently lost. I don't even want to repeat their names, given that they still weigh heavy on my heart, but I will. Mindy, Parker, --"

He practically slept through all the rest of that. Some... speech that didn't mean anything. It was like jargon to remind everyone that he was 'weighing the gravity of these things', or 'taking them very seriously'. To Jack, it meant nothing. Scythe was all he had, and all he knew. He would remain to the last man.

A few hours later, and they were out in the desert. They were all on their Chariots, with Grakain leashed beside the vehicles to make sure they kept pace with one another. The beasts tended to do well enough at following the pull of the leash, after all. "Scythe... we ride," Emmanuel yelled, the men and women powering up their machines before eventually steering them off across the surface of the desert. The sun was high in the sky, but sunset would come again soon. They would ride until deep in the night, or whenever they managed to find cover, shelter. Perhaps even water. He remembered that, somewhere in the midst of their journey here, they found a great pool of water surrounded by crags. Emmanuel claimed it was proof of some sort of divine providence; that The Way had meant something after all. Whatever the truth was, he hoped for something like that again. Their gang could not survive a failed voyage. The whisperings grew louder; Emmanuel would be killed if he failed one more time.
