Ash 30 4621¤

A great Ash wind shifted the trees on the streets lit by lamp-light. Leaves stirred as the smell of something unsavory yet sweet lingered on the porch the three women sat on. Miki was stoned. Pogma had used part of the spoils to get the good leaf. The black sacks Miki had procured from the cat burglar's home admittedly wasn't Pogma's things, but she was grateful for the help. There were whispers in the rumor mill that an arsonist had been caught in Amoren. No one had come for them yet. Miki had told Izul everything that had transpired and after the verbal lashing Izul confessed that she was worried this wasn't the last they had seen of either Egert or Cloak. Taking a long drag from her corn pipe she coughed, great spittle leaving her mouth, leaving her breathless, passing it on to Pogma. The night life was quite the splendor here, even in the poor districts Miki was fascinated by humans and their garb. Curious and pompous place Daravin was. The slight memory of her home came to mind but she pushed it away, the smoke's paranoia wouldn't get her this time. Would it?

Standing up she waited for Cloak to arrive no longer, half of her thought had she sat on that porch all night she may arrive but no, the game was still on. She would have to be found. What happened to her gold pile? It would be too hot to head out to check Cloak's great lair of coin and goodies, instead perhaps she would find somewhere else the thief has stashed away. She shook her head, admitting to a stranger she had many hideouts was a stupid move. Novice, young, gullible, or stupid she wasn't sure. But what Miki was sure of is she would find in these pratty streets the hideout of a certain gnome.

Supposedly gnomes were a rarity among common folk but Miki knew of them. Settled in the mountains when they arrived they had heard the tales of the little ones in the deep bowels of the mountain. Curious things Miki had only seen another one once, he was a broker at a bank in another city in Greater Daravin. So tiny and such a large mustache, his accent was interesting-- like he said all of his words wrong or exaggerated. Oh what a mess this whole thing was, Cloak may have been naïve but there was something Miki liked about her. Burning down her home was wrong and spiteful, should this mess press neater than cotton under a hot iron she vowed to never admit what she had done to Cloak's home.
'It was Egert who did it,'
Miki convinced herself,
'When he broke into my friend's house. Fuck him, I hope the Halamire got to him first.'

Her meandering, and it was meandering, found her in a rather shitty part of town. She was clearly on the outskirts as houses were getting farther and farther apart being replaced with stones and shrubs instead of lights. As the night let on the moon shown the way as she figured she was gloriously lost. There was no way her sense would help her find Cloak's hideout and with no signs of the curious or eccentric she threw up her hands in the air saying,
"Fuck this. Wild orb chasing bullshit."
While spitting on the ground. Heading back home she was sure she saw the flash of a black fabric but it was there and gone down an alleyway.
'Could have been a cat.'
She sighed. Miki's tail flicked in anger while she wrung her hands and walked looking to her left and right. That was when a deep voice stirred her from her thoughts.
"You lost?"
Miki swung around, almost jumping out of her skin, to see she had passed right by a Halamire. He was only partially in his uniform, is shoes were missing and his hair was disheveled. He looked drunk as he lounged on the side of a building.
"Not at all, I was just headed back home."
Miki said slyly, without missing a beat.
"You're lookin'-hic-for something at least. What's that?"
The coy and slow way he spoke to her, the hiccupping, this man was off duty in his uniform drunk as any skunk she had seen.
"Looking for what we all do, I guess. Home. Goodnight, ser."

The large man crossed his arms against his chest, wobbling slightly. Miki gulped. This wasn't going to be that easy.
"Now I know I don't have any shoes on but where ya headed, maybe I can walk you home?"
Miki blanched, was he hitting on her? A Halamire? From what little Miki knew about the Candor this was surely forbidden. This could be an angle.
"Oh no, you definitely don't wanna be seen with the likes of me. I'm just a villager. Honest."
He grinned while approaching her,
"Don't you worry about it, I'm just doing my job."

Barf. Something, the leaf?, told her he could be stinging her for her appearance. Had they truly found the arsonist? He took pace with her as she walked aimlessly through the streets, sticking close to the lights and not saying a word. And yet, she didn't lead him anywhere near her temporary home. Instead she found a bar and headed inside. It was brightly lit and beautiful inside, but the collection of people looked seedy. He stepped inside with her, as brazen as possible.
"You either aren't from around here or you're plainly stupid."
He barked while laughing. The Halamire was a young man and not bad looking, but if he had any inkling of what Miki had done she was in huge trouble. Evidently, upon closer inspection, she noticed the sign reading "Squeaky Lizard", meaning she was at she shadiest bar in town. Or so Izul had said. Putting her hand to her face she spoke plainly to the Halamire.
"I am headed for a drink. You don't have to join me, I think I can lift the mug myself."
The look on his face was at first completely nonplussed, then broadly grinning again.
"You know my family is from a village, where are you from? Ever since I completed my Remnant initation I have been working for the Halamire. You sure you don't want a drink together?"
Miki wasn't sure, but it seemed she was wrong and he was just being a creepy fuck.

"Honestly I think I need to go. Thank you for walking with me."
This is when it really hit him, he looked upset but he did turn tail and leave. Not good. Coming in with a Halamire got her proper stares from the bar and even a few of the prominent looking people left. By the time Miki had a drink in her hand most of the bar had left. The bartender was far off from her but after some time gravitated towards to ask,
"Another round?"
Miki considered but decided against it.
"I ought to keep my wits about me."
Pursing his lips the man agreed and went back to his work.

Once another crowd had settled in she thought she had waited out the man and took her turn to slip in and out of the door as inconspicuously as possible. Checking around she lifted the torn cloak to hide her antlers once again, then left towards Pogma's house yet again. Finding passage through the streets was easy enough and she saw no more sign of the drunk Halamire. But also no sign of Cloak either. She took one gander for the black market but was too afraid to stroll in there without her rifle. She wasn't born pretty to be dumb. Eventually, when the moon was high and the Ash breeze was telling the brunt of its blowing tale, she found her way back to Pogma's rickety house. Empty handed she was glad the Halamire didn't have any other inklings for her. That was when she heard it, a crowd of yelling men and women beating down a door right next to the house. Pogma, Izul, and Miki all rushed to the common room to look out the window.

Miki's heart was pounding, did they choose the wrong house? Had they been sold out? Pogma started to cry and Izul comforted her, snorting gruffly in anger. Burning eyes found Miki's, saying this would not be forgiven. Instead of the Halamire pounding down their door as well, after some time Miki peeked out to see them arresting Pogma's neighbors. Miki breathed a great sigh but knew the last of it wasn't over. What if they had stung the wrong people?
"They finally got those two huh?"
Came Pogma. It came out that they evidently were terrible people and it was only a matter of time before the Halamire busted them. Miki gulped but said nothing, she wasn't sure how much was known about her antics. It was decided then they would leave immediately to meet Raphael. Packing their things the crimson women were gone by the morning.
