Appearance and Biology
A relatively large, conspicuous mushroom Fusilladecaps are quite common around the world of Atharen, growing numerous and often found in groups with basidiocarps in all stages of development.
The mushroom’s cap is about 3-8 inches in diameter is covered in numerous large, bright orange spots that nestle next to each other around the rim of the cap; a membrane is present that than reacts with the ambient air which causes the mushroom change from a white-creamy hue to more vibrant reds, and yellow.
One of its distinct features is its hollowed out flesh with protruding spore caps that is generally seen as a dark gray to black spots that is close to the stipe which stands about 2-8 inches and is generally a color of white or light shade of orange.
The Fusilladgecap has free grills that are peach tone, with a spore print as black. The base of the mushroom has a large bulb that is white in color with 4 distinct rings or ruffs. It has been associated with smells like ash or gunpowder.
This mushroom can be found in temperate forest, shallow caves, and crags that has access to full sunlight.
Life Cycle & Habitat
Initially the Fusilladecaps emerge from the soil looking like white eggs, after which; the mushroom’s cap is covered in numerous large, bright orange spots that nestle next to each other around the rim of the cap. Generally, Fusilladecaps live in soil that is ripe with decaying plant matter such as leaves, and fallen trees; The spores will quickly develop an ash-grey mycelium that is coated in a glimmering sheen of oil that makes it water resistant.
As the caps turn into mature mushrooms, the plant begins to release large quantities of spores through the bright orange spots that would burst into the air that will allow them to reproduce; though lightweight & combustible the spores can be compacted well, so that the spores have been used as an additional source for using gunpowder.
The mushrooms, and mycelium generally have a short lifespan, only living for a year before dying out but due to the sheer amount of spores produced, it is common for newer generations to take the place of the old.
Uses
While the Fuscilladecaps are known to be able to make an alternative gunpowder-like substance in the form of its spores, it is better akin to assisting on improving the flash point of various substances. In alchemy, there are certain materials that require to be heated to such a point that it would be impossible to do so by normal means.
The mushroom, and spores can be used as a catalyst to improve exothermic reactions or in the case of medicine, it is able to be used as a heating cream if small amounts of is used as a primary solution whether it is an infusion, tincture or dry powder itself.
The more common practice of using Fuscilladecaps is the usage of its spicy & mildly earth profile in cooking; which pairs well with a large quantity of savory dishes, and the finished cooked product looks more akin to standard button mushrooms that have been cooked.
