Appearance and Biology
A deciduous tree that is seen growing about between 60-85 feet in length and about 37-84 inches around the trunk; The bark is seen as fissured with various colour ranges between light beige to silvery gray.
The leaves are about 4.5 to 6 inches in length & width, alternating on the stem, they are undulate, 3-deltoid-shaped with dichotomous veins. Hard, and leathery to the touch; this persists for the first 6 to 9 years, where it is covered in a silvery scurfy hair on both sides of the leaves but over time, the surfaces wear off to reveal the hard, and leathery surface.
The seeds are a type of nut which is in the form of an acorn that is about 1 ½ - 2 inches long & about 1.5cm in diameter; the acorn is very hard with a woody exterior that sits in a cup for 12-15 months for which it will mature before falling off. The surface of the cup is considered smooth with a waxy sheen, the nuts are produced in clusters on a single stem.
Life Cycle & Habitat
Starting out as an acorn, the seed would need at least 30-60cm of space with sufficient sunlight before it is able to germinate and create seedlings. The seedling phase generally lasts around 25-40 years before it is considered mature, as they only grow about 10-12 inches per year.
Being a slow grower, and shade tolerant that requires a moderate amount of water present in the water table due to having deep roots; they tend to be the more dominant species of trees when the fast-growing trees die out such as aspen. They house many small animals & insects alike, and are considered one of the keystone species of trees that maintains the health of the forest. The average lifespan of the Silvertree Haddory is about 500 years with the maximum lifespan recorded about 900 years.
One of the things that is known about Silverlime Haddory is that it is famous for housing symbiotic relationships with various kinds of edible mushrooms & truffles; which are highly prized by the nobility.
These trees can be found in semi-desert & subtropical rainforest such as Sil’vaine [insert other nations or areas];
Uses
Considered a hardwood, silverlime haddory is mainly used in the construction of homes & yield in its lumber, due to the pristine silvery sheen present in the wavy growth rings with a light beige heartwood when present under moonlight, this wood is often prized by carpenters to give an illusory effect. Overharvesting has occurred more than once in a couple of forests which drastically reduced its presence within Atharen making it an uncommon tree to see nowadays.
Despite the overharvesting, some lords, and culinary enthusiasts would preserve large areas of land to dedicate the cultivation of various mushrooms & truffles so it is not uncommon to see vast amounts of land being patrolled to prevent people from harvesting protected lands.
