Right Place, Right Time
11th of Searing, Year 120, A.o.S

Rhea found herself in the eastern part of the capital, on duty as extra security near the entertainment district of the city. Pubs, bars, and restaurants lined the strip with shops and boutiques dotting the district as well. She gazed into some of their windows, mentally shopping for herself, but knowing that she would never spend the coin unless it was for her guild.

Making her round she came upon another patrol, the usual guardsmen and woman of the Order of the Brave. Have any excitement yet? of them asked, to which she shook her head with shrug. "All quiet on this side, nothing to make a fuss over at least." she replied, mentioning a few arguments here and there, but nothing that warranted de-escalation, merely a stern look or shout to break it up.

The patrolmen suggested she get familiar with this part of the capital as it could be good for business down the road, getting to know the people and whatnot. Taking them up on their advice Rhea continued her patrol around the town. It held its own charm, being the hub of Atinaw and all, but even with its uniqueness, it still was like any city to here, and not even the capital could replace the charm of Loregard.

Rhea was certain this place would be easy to make her mark in if nothing else make a very decent living, it gave all lucrative escort jobs from caravans and merchants in and out of the city. As a plus, it was were the important eyes and ears where that would see her guilds potential and elevate her fame, not that she cared for that sort of thing, but it would be good for business.

As she walked the patrol route she would occasionally stop into taverns or pubs and would try and get a feel for the people, speak to the owners and employees if had the time. They were an interesting bunch with colorful viewpoints, some good some bad, but who was she to judge them for it. In any case, it was reaching almost an hour left of her patrol when she could hear some commotion coming from a crowd up ahead at a local tavern. seeing that she was still on duty, she waded through the crowd in order to get to the front to see what exactly was going on.

She couldnt really say she liked she saw when she finally forced her way threw the crowd. It would have been an understatement to say that this was a very delicate situation. A young woman, maybe around Rhea's own age, was being held against her will. What froze the Iulide in her tracks however was what the woman was holding. She had an infant, an infant in her arms.

At first, she couldnt believe what she was seeing, the man holding the mother and child hostage bellowing about being wronged by her kinship and to get back at them taking her and her baby for ransom. Among the crowd was the woman's mating partner, a looked of frustration and worry plastered over his face. She could see the desperation in everyone involved and knew she had to do something about it before things escalated further.

"Sir, I promise you this is not the way to go about getting reparations for whatever it is you lost. If you let them go, no one has to get hurt and we can solve this in a civil manner." she suggested, inching slowing from the crowd toward the raving man. She wondered why the woman hadn't fled from him, as he was unarmed, at least to Rhea's eyes. Was he hiding a weapon she couldnt see?

The baby began to wail causing the man's fury to increase, threatening the mother if she didnt soothe the child immediately. He was agitated, which made her think he could have been on some sort of drug. That would be the only explanation for such an outburst like this. Looking to the husband Rhea called to him. "He claims you took everything from him, what exactly is he talking about?" her eyes never leaving the deranged individual as she spoke.

"His brother worked for me as a guard for one of my caravan's but he was killed when defending it from raiders a year ago. Ever since then the poor bastard has blamed me for taking the only family he had from him, making idle threats and causing disturbances, but nothing like this ever." he explained, gripping Rhea by the arm. "Please, I beg of you save them, that's firstborn, I dont know what I'd do if I lost them." he pleaded, Rhea letting out a sigh.

She was no hostage negotiator, but she would do her damnedest to save them. "I'll do all that is within my power to save them, but he is not in a cooperating mood, so I make no promises." she said, resting her hand on top of his own. With a deep breath, she looked back to the belligerent male, inching ever so cautiously toward him.

One wrong step, one wrong move, and things could go left. As if on cue a patrol of knight came through the crowd, spooking the male causing him to play his trump card. From within his shirt, he pulled a live dragonshard out. STAY BACK!!!!! STAY BACK OR I'LL INCINERATE ALL THREE OF US!!!! he roared, the mother screaming in fear, the baby wailing alongside her, and a symphony of gasps and panic among the crowd.

Rhea would have been the one to get embroiled in this mess, but she couldnt back out now. Fear ran through her body like a chill down one's spine. Just how in the hell was she going to save the hostages, and disarm this man without killing them, or worse herself? "Everyone stay back, do as he says." she called to the crowd. "Dont do anything to agitate him." she requested, the lead patrolman nodding.

Looking back to the man Rhea's hands went to the hilt of her sword. IM WARNING YOU, STAY BACK OR I'LL SMASH THIS AND INCINERATE ALL THREE OF US!!!! he yelled, raising the hand that held the volatile magical crystal high into the air. "Easy there friend, there's no need for that. I just wanna talk. I know you must be hurting, losing the only family you had, and feeling like no one cares, but I care. When one of us hurts we all hurt." she began, trying to soothe his anger by showing him empathy, something he probably never received from those around him.

Though for as much pity as she had for the man, she couldnt allow this to continue, find there to be no excuse for such drastic and irrational actions. The question she kept asking herself however was how? How was she to settle this where no one got hurt? What comfort could she possibly offer him to ensure he let the hostages go?

Then it hit her, Rhea unlatching the belt that held the scabbard of her sword, the clang of it hitting the floor as she approached with open palms raised. "You won't get anything by holding a mother and an infant hostage, that much I know. They aren't the ideal bargaining chips in situations like these." she began, standing a good ten feet from him. She could see the swell of emotions on his face.

Fear, anger, regret, frustration, it was all so clear to her at this distance that she could feel it on her own skin. He backed up a foot or two from the wall of a nearby building, trying to keep the distance between them. "If you let them go I will give you the better bargaining chip." she explained, hoping he would take the bait, as he plan was coming together.

"Yeah and what would that be?" he asked, holding the crimson magic crystal above him and his hostages. "Me." she answered, a confused look on the man's face. "And just who the fucking hell are you?" he spat back, tucking his head behind the mother. "I'm the daughter of a Finla, the Finla of Loregard to be exact. My father will meet any demand to ensure my safety" she assured, almost anxious as she was so close, close enough that she would have taken the chance to charge the man and wrestle the dragonshard from him.

She wouldn't have to though. As she had been talking to him, keeping his focus on her, a knight from the Order of the Brave had taken up position on a nearby rooftop. Once the knight had his target, he let loose an arrow, piercing the man's arm causing him to drop the dragon shard, crying out in pain.

Using that chance Rhea immediately moved to rescue the hostages from him, putting herself between him and them in case he went to grab them. She watched as the mother was embraced by her husband and ushered to safety beyond the crowd, knights and patrolmen mobilizing toward the deranged male. Turning to him she restrained his arms so he couldnt reach for the dragonshard.

Once the knights took the man into custody, Rhea let out a sigh of relief, her body shaking from a mix of adrenaline, fear, and anxiety. She was startled out of her breather when the merchant and his wife took her hand, thanking her for her heroism. "There's no need to thank me, I was simply in the right place at the right time as all." she noted, awkwardly laughing as if wasnt a big deal. In actuality, it was, and she knew just how lucky she was in a situation like this.

"Nonsense, you saved my family, and for that, I will never forget what you did for me and my own. If you are ever in the need of work, you will always be welcomed to guard my caravans." he said bowing to her, then escorting his family to the knights. Rhea was glad she could help, more so she was glad no one had to die.

Even more so she was glad her job was over, talk about ending with a bang.

Comments: Tense! Thankfully everything turned out for the best. I wonder where that guy got his dragonshard, and what gave him the idea to use it that way? The entire situation seemed a bit odd. Interesting... Perhaps there is something there plot-wise as well?
